I'm going to be moving to the Baltimore area for work pretty soon, and I was curious if anyone on sherdog had any experience with any bjj schools in that area.

I am a bluebelt with about 1.5 years experience if that helps.

Please come check out Crazy 88 in Elkridge (south of the city in Howard County). We have a great facility, great instructors and it's just an all-around great environment. I have been there for about 6 months now and I love the place. There are classes 7 days a week, as early as 6:30am and as late at 10:00pm.

Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - School Information Directory

I can't tell you about other schools in the area, because this is the only one I've trained at.

Hope to see you at the school.

Where exactly are you going to be living?

Ground Control Academy - jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts in Baltimore, MD

There is 3 locations one in Baltimore, Owings Mills and Columbia. Im in the Baltimore one also a Bluebelt with alittle under 2 years. Great school man, fantastic teachers, Rob the guy who runs it is a great guy who will help you get started, great equipment but its alittle pricy but please come in and try it out when you can. If you come at night time my name is Jimmie im about 6 feet, real skinny and will be wearing a Blue Ground Control shirt so id like to see you there man.

I'll be living in Bel Air. Crazy 88 seems like it might be a bit of a hike. Baltimore BJJ doesn't seem like too bad of a drive.

Any other suggestions?

I have family in Bel Air and have driven to the Baltimore location numerous times, it takes 15-20 minutes. I train at Ground Control and would highly suggest it for a number of reasons.

1. One of the co-owners (Jon Rallo) is a Black Belt under Renzo Gracie. He has fought numerous times in MMA (He was invited to be on TUF but blew out his knee). He was the driving force behind MMA getting legalized in Maryland. He also promotes Shogun Fights which (aside from the UFC) is the biggest MMA event being put on in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania. John instructs the No-Gi classes and MMA classes.

2. Mark Finley is the Gi Instructor and also received his Black Belt from Renzo. He was originally a Rickson student back in the early 1990's until he moved to the east coast.

3. In total their are 3 Blackbelts and somewhere near 10+ brown belts. (At least two of whom should be getting promoted to Black Belt in the near future). In addition they also have a Judo Black Belt, which makes actually makes 4 blackbelts.

4. Do you want to train Muay Thai? If so then you need to train Ground Control. The head instructor (and co-owner) Henry Smith has a 47 and 8 record in his 55 Muay Thai fights. He has lived and trained in Thailand and has relations with the major camps in Thailand. He has also trained/cornerd at least one UFC fighter that I know of.

5. Ground Control has three different locations throughout the Baltimore area which you can drop into at any point.

6. Ground Control has discounts for student, military and police.

7. Ground Control students get fights. If you're looking for Muay Thai, MMA or BJJ, Ground Control students are out there doing it. (Don't expect to walk in and get an MMA fight right away. If you haven't fought MMA or Muay Thai before, they won't book you until you build your stand up skills a bit.)

8. Ground Control does a lot of seminars some of the ones I remember off hand are Renzo Gracie, Matt Serra, Don Cerrone, and Ricardo Almeida.

Check out the school, I think you'll like it...

There are a bunch of good schools in the area (GC included). I've met people who've trained at Baltimore BJJ, Ground Control and Top Flight (and of course my school - Crazy 88) and everyone I've met in-person seems to be good people. Good luck!

crazy 69 is nothing great!!! At least GROUNG CONTROL has black belts .

My post was made in jest. I am not interested in getting into a pissing match comparing schools. I am sure Ground Control is an excellent academy. I am sure that Crazy 88 is as well.

Look, both are great schools.

The thing is you can't write "GROUND CONTROL SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!" and then say, just kidding. Your trying to stir things up by saying something like that and it shows a total lack of maturity and common sense.

EDIT * I should have said a total lack of maturity, common sense and respect.

Listen, I really I wasn't trying to stir things up. I was making a joke about how people often argue about who's school is better. I thought the absurdity of the comment would make it obvious that I wasn't even close to being serious. Maybe it wasn't that obvious... I don't know.

I will remove the comment. The last thing I want is for people to think I would actually bash another school. I have zero interest in doing so (or the qualification to truly make such a judgement).

EDIT: And I apologize if you felt I disrespected your school. Again, it wasn't my intention.

lloyd irvin has schol just about everywhere in MD/DC area.

I train in Rockville at Yamasaki's. It's a 50 minute drive for me but where else are you going to get a school with 6 black belts? But I understand the commute being a killer for you.

Doesn't Renzo Gracie have a school up in Baltimore?

Ground Control is the only Renzo affiliate in Baltimore.

I "think" Rallo and Mario are buddies as Mario reffed at the first Shogun Fights that Rallo put on. Not sure if he did the second. I think he may have been up in PA for the UFC that weekend.
