bjj black belt in 4-6 years?

i don't know it could be just me but does it seem like there are alot of people getting to bjj black belt in 4-6 years? bj penn, llyod irvin, mike fowler, ryan hall(i'm not sure about this one i know he competed in purple belt at the no gi worlds but i heard he was promoted to black belt by llyod) thats the ones that come to mind off the top of my head. i wanted to add sim go but i can't remember how long he has been doing bjj. so can you guys add some of the people i left off?
 
If you look at BJJ overall, not too many get BB in 6 or less years. All the guys you mentioned there are either supremely talented, dedicated, fanatical or some combination of the three. They are literally the sort that train 4-6 hours a day, every day. And when I say train I dont mean roll for a little while and talk about the weekend for an hour. I mean train.

i do think if anyone were a decent athlete and had the time ( say 20-30 hours a week) they could be a BB in 6 years. But very few people have that sort of time or dispenible income to make the time.
 
"A lot of people are getting their BBS..." then you give as examples some of the best grapplers in the country.

The guy above is completely right. Given the means and effort to dedicate yourself like that, 6 years isn't to unreasonable.
 
There are a LOT more BJJers 5 years ago to today than 10-20 years ago too.

i never said it was unreasonable. i simply found it to be very interesting and then asked for examples of other people that had done the same thing.
 
BBJ blackbelts are still a lot harder to come by than say a blackbelt in tae kwon do. Maybe this will change as BJJ becomes more mainstream, but right now getting a BJJ blackbelt is still something that is very hard to do.

You just named 4-5 people. Now ask yourself how many people practice BJJ...
 
i dont think ryan hall even got his brown belt yet, let alone his black.
 
My instructor (Mike Mrkulic) got his in six years.
 
Marc Laimon got his in 5 1/2 years, but like others have said, his entire life was jiu jitsu.

Me personally right now I can't even seem to fit time to get down to the gym with consistant 10 & 12 hour work days
 
Marcio Feitosa said that 4-6 years is about right if you train consistently. The truly gifted get them in less than 4 years, sometimes 3 years. In Brazil they laugh at you if you ask them about 8 years to a black belt. That's just something that they sold Americans to get more money. No-one in Brazil would "make" people wait 8-10 years for a black belt because there's not much money in BJJ there, but overseas....

Somebody asked this in another thread also.. was that you? He's an American, of Croatian descent. He doesn't have an accent or anything but he speaks a little Croatian.
 
Nowadays if you compete consistently and win a lot it's feasible to get a BB in 4-6 years.
