I've never been before, and I would like to train tomorrow, and my dojo only offers open mat on saturdays. I have only rolled a couple times, and wouldn't be a very competitive roll for the more advanced people. Is open mat mainly for advanced people(or at least people who know what they're doing) to train with eachother? I dont want to annoy people, as I would be needing quite a bit of help.

Not sure if it's appropriate for beginners to go during open mat.

If its your first ever class i might not suggest going, if you go to a structured class you'll get more, open mat is usually 95% sparing, well at my gym at least, you might get injured by your own actions, because you don't know nothing, or you might roll with somone who doesnt know you as a new person and treats you like you know how to tap/escape etc, and you my get hurt, id recommend going to a scheduled class, that way the instructor will keep an eye on you and warn people that you're new

I've been to 8 classes, rolled 4 times. I always make sure to tell people that I'm new and theyre pretty accomodating. But that's at the end of class, we spar for an hour. I feel like the sparring segment of a class would be different from open mat.

Since you said that you already have experience rolling, you should definitely go to open mat and go train.

Open mat is a prime opportunity to roll with more advanced players, many whom will give you a lot of real-time tutorial so you develop outstanding fundamentals early on. You cannot go wrong with more mat time. Just follow the rules, be respectful, ask questions and don't work leglocks!

As a white belt, I try to make it to every open mat I can. I can get nearly unlimited rolling time, plus it's unstructured enough so you can stop, answer questions, or just work on one specific technique.

I say definitely go. The more advanced players will suss out that you're new after the first roll and then (hopefully) try and turn it into a learning experience for you. Don't think that you're wasting their time either, since the best way to really learn something is to teach it to others ...

Go. Just tell everybody you are brand new. It's that simple.

Go, be polite and respectful, keep an open mind, and when in doubt: relax. When really in doubt: TAP.

Only go if you want practice and would like to get better.

Even if you can't roll, you can learn a lot by watching advanced belts roll in person

yeah. what are you some type of fucking sissy? go out there and battle.

man... this is some straight out bitch stuff.

For sure, go. Nobody will care if the new guy shows up, if anything it shows initiative. U will get beat up and down and all around, but thats ok. Try to look at what your opponent is doing when u try to do stuff ( I.e. watch what they do when u try to pass guard or mount etc. It will help u a lot

Go.

Honestly, you're better off going than starting a new thread on this.
