Anyone know where he trained his wrestling? It's freaking amazing.

Now I know a lot of it has to do w/ his flexibility and his incredible natural talent, but you can be freaking stretch armstrong....you're gonna get taken down w/ out some training. I've even heard that Randy Couture had a hard time taking him down. And it seemed like GSP couldn't do it til he wore him out.

BJ doesn't actually need to train physically when it comes to technique. his technical ability is truely off the charts. I think he learned wrestling by daydreaming about it while eating twinkies.

He wrestled in high school, trains wrestling a lot according to his own quotes. Of course, wrestling with a fence behind you is not really 'wrestling'. It's a part of cage-mma fighting that really doesn't exist anywhere else. It's like wrestling while sitting in a hammock - it's a totally weird and unique thing unto itself that doesn't rely on low hips and legs back, but instead relies on sitting flush with the fence and fighting hands. I'm sure some mma folks around here can give further insights.

Thanks DaRuckus.

Do you know where he wrestled? And how good he was? Also do you have any links where I can read this (not calling you out, just would like to read it for myself).

Yeah, I noticed whenever someone goes for a double/single he seems to want to get to the fence. He's a master at using it for TDD.

Even though, there's some gif running around where someone tries to take him down in training and he does this flying/leaping defense for it.

I can confirm that he did not wrestle in high school. I would of been in severe trouble if he did as I would of been the guy in his weight class from the rival high school.

Man, that woulda sucked!

This.

BJ's mma wrestling is incredible, and his takedown defense is awesome. He is a master at using the cage to nullify any takedowns, he gets his hips low and his weight away so it makes it extremely difficult to lift and dump, he's very active with short punches and elbows to keep his opponent from being able to fully commit to the takedown, and he is very good at handfighting to prevent the single to double. I hardly think his high school wrestling experience is his key to success in his Octagon takedown defense. His ability to know where his weight, hips, and base are is truly on a gifted level.

I actually said to myself several times, "I wonder how this fight would have gone if it took place in an open field."

Probably would have ended in the second. With nothign for Diego to push BJ against, they'd have either had to grapple or strike. I don't think either would have helped his chances, but to be fair we didn't see how his groundwork stacked up.

in an open field, bj would bounce around like a kangaroo till the end of the open field :P

What happens in ring-based mma? Do they eventually just get pushed through the ropes?

Or does the ref break it up and re-start in the centre?

Did you ever run into Travis Lee?

I missed Travis Lee by one year. This guy I wrestled from Maui, gave Travis Lee his only high school loss in the State Finals match. Of course, Travis Lee was only a freshman and Kamal was a senior.

... I wish I had one more year.

I remember thinking who is this guy coming out of Hawaii?

I think he was the same class as Simmons and Dubuque.

I loved watching him wrestle for Cornell, Couldn't beleive when he beat Fleeger, HAd a nasty underhook series.

He never really did make a serious pursuit in freestyle or Greco did he?
