One of the most successful and well know directors in the last 4 decades. Love him or hate him, you can't argue that this iconic director is doing something right. While like any other director, he has a few misses, it is absolutely amazing to see how many great films are under Spielberg's belt.
So out of so many great ones, which movie is his greatest?

Jaws (1975)

A thrill-ride of suspense that continues to deliver the goods to the audience almost 40 years later. The plot is somewhat thin: a large shark is terrorizing the tourists at the local beach. However, with that said Steven Spielberg's direction is amazing. The young director (only 28 at the time) showed unlimited potential and produced one of the biggest summer blockbusters of all times.
IMDB: 8.1\10

Jurassic Park (1993)

"Welcome to Jurassic Park". That part still gives me chills every time I watch this movie. Along with T2, this movie is a special effects milestone and could still hold his own when it was re-released last year, 20 years after it debuted.
IMDB: 8\10
Rotten Tomatoes: 93%

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

One of these movies you can watch over and over and it never gets old. Adventure really can't get any better than this. Amazing movie!
IMDB: 8.6\10
Rotten Tomatoes: 95%

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

One of the first movies I remember from my childhood is E.T. A beautiful and touching movie, that containing so many memorable scenes and some of the most recognised shots in movie history.
IMDB: 7.9\10
Rotten Tomatoes: 98%

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)

E.T wasn't Spielberg's first experience with aliens. 5 years earlier, in one of his first big projects, he showed us that not all aliens are out to kill us. Thanks too great special effects, a unique story and masterful direction from a young Spielberg, Close Encounters is a Sci-Fi great and one of the most praised movies in Spielberg's filmography.

Saving Private Ryan (1998)

One of the best war films ever made, Saving Private Ryan is raw and shocking. Not only because of the gore scenes, but also because of the camera-work. Using an hand held cam, combined with the absence of music soundtrack during the breathtaking battle scenes, gives a realistic and natural feel to the film. One of Spielberg's finest.
IMDB: 8.6\10
Rotten Tomatoes: 92%

Schindler's List (1993)

'Schindler's List' is undoubtedly one of the greatest movies of all time. Spielberg went the extra mile in every aspect of this movie. Superior cinematography, brilliant actors, brilliant score, amazing screenplay. In spite of the horror, the film is powerfully uplifting. It is a study in the worst and best in human nature. A true masterpiece.
IMDB: 8.9\10

Lincoln (2012)

An extremely well put together and extremely well acted reenactment of the passing of the thirteenth amendment. The newest movie from Steven Spielberg stars Daniel Day-Lewis as the man in the hat, Abraham Lincoln, in a brilliant performances.
IMDB: 7.5\10
Rotten Tomatoes: 90%

Catch Me If You Can (2002)

Inspired by a real story, 'Catch Me If You Can' is fast paced, well acted and great fun.
Maybe not a "big" film like the others mentioned in this thread, but every bit as entertaining.
IMDB: 8\10
Rotten Tomatoes: 96%

I would have included Minority Report, and removed either Lincoln, Close Encounters or Catch Me If You Can

Too many variables and genres to pick a "best" one for me. My favorite, however, based on number of times watched and sheer nostalgia is Jurassic Park.

I have to give this a little thought but just to throw it out there, AI is extremely underrated, IMO.

Or Minorty Report.

My personal order based on that list would be:

1. Schindler's List
2. Jaws
3. Raiders of the Lost Ark
4. Saving Private Ryan
5. Jurassic Park
6. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
7. Catch Me If You Can
8. Lincoln
9. Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Not sure why you didn't include Munich, Minority Report, or The Color Purple. As good as Lincoln was, those 3 films are better, IMO.

His best? I'd probably say Schindler's List. My favorite? Jurassic Park.

I'll split the difference and go with Jaws.

My personal order based on that list would be:

1. Schindler's List
2. Jaws
3. Raiders of the Lost Ark
4. Saving Private Ryan
5. Jurassic Park
6. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
7. Catch Me If You Can
8. Lincoln
9. Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Not sure why you didn't include Munich, Minority Report, or The Color Purple. As good as Lincoln was, those 3 films are better, IMO.

Can't say I disagree. I tried to make the list as objective as I could, so I included Lincoln based on his scores. For the same reason I'v put Raiders and not The Last Crusade, even though I it better.

Saving Private Ryan for me. That is now the war movie that others are basically judged off.
