I am starting at UT in the fall as a Sports Management major and I'm looking of ran MMA gym nearby. I am hoping to work in MMA as a talent scout/agent/promoter or something similar. I am preferably looking for a gym that I could stay with for all 4 years and intern at my Senior year. If you can offer any suggestions, please help me out.

Can't vouch for them, but they are an affiliated school (Pedro Sauer) and I was about to join there except a) I found out Soneca was teaching at Buttarini Karate which is b) much closer to me and c) had morning classes that I could work my schedule around.

Though I'm seriously considering maybe switching there anyway; they a lot more no-gi training. So far there's only one no-gi class Soneca teaches, which I canm never seem to get to. There were offering Vale Tudo, but I don't know about that now (nothing on their schedule).

I talked to them months ago; they were offering BJJ for something like $75, BJJ and Vale Tudo for slightly less than twice that. The guys who run the place have a good rep, and I believe they compete.

Plus, it's off Broadway...that increases the odds you'll get to apply what you learn on the street. :icon_chee

That is who i trained with shortly while in Knoxville but at that time he was affiliated with the school below...

http://www.pmaknoxville.com/main.htm

so at the school for a bit was Pegro brandao, Helio "soneca" Moreira and Alex Crispim..

Anyway the top link is to Helio Soneca Moreira and the link below offers more or less kickboxing and other arts as well as instruction from Pedro who is a BB himself.

I don't really have an answer to your question, but its nice to see a fellow volunteer on here.

Soneca left PMA in Knoxville some time ago. Bruce Corrigan had Pedro Brandao teaching there for awhile, but he's gone now (joined the US Army, apparently) and so far as I know Corrigans' kids teach there.

Soneca now teaches at the Butterrini Karate dojo on Kingston Pike ( www.jbak.net ). This is where I'd been going, and need to get my sorry ass back in there (work and other factors have kept me away a few weeks). Be advised: it's primarily gi, so if you're looking to train no-gi, Knoxville BJJ might be what you're looking for.

So no BJJ training at PMA? I moved away from there a cpl years ago.
Back in Tampa now.

I guess I'll check out KBJJ. If you guys have ever heard of Mark Hatmaker, he's an MMA authority from Knoxville who has written a bunch of books (look on Amazon). Surprisingly, he only really teaches personal defense classes and shit like that.

I was in knoxville for a weekend and stopped by KBJJ and rolled with them. They were very cool and nice. If I lived there that is where I would trian.

My understanding is that it is taught there, among other things. One of the reasons Corrigan brought in Brandao was to get trained up to his black belt.

I've been wondering where you've been!

FYI: JBAK is moving sometime in August, and the new BJJ mat will be 2-3 times larger then the current one. I don't know if the class schedule will change or not, but we'll have more room on new mats!

Edit There are at least a couple guys who train in BJJ at JBAK who fight, if that is what you are interested in, and I'm sure the could clue you into the local scene...

Mostly work has been conflicting with me getting is. Plus one week I had a cold, and the last week or so I had some skin condition which keeps giving me weird/itchy rashes flare up and royally mess up my hands. While not contagious, I could see why anyone would not have wanted me touching them...plus my hands hurt like hell and cracking, which may have cause me to bleed on someone. I hope to be in this Thursday.

Good news about the location moving; I only hope it's not too far away. We definately need more mat space; seems like any class bigger than 6 people winds up crashing into each other and the walls whilst rolling.

Location is within a minute of the current place. You know where Hollywood Video is on KP just west of JBAK now? In there, there is a Food Lion and next to it is a large space that JBAK is moving into. The BJJ mat and Karate mat will both be larger, so I am told anyway.
