Dear All

Happy New Year :-)

I had surgery on my nose to help breathing in Jan 2011 & after 12 months hitting bags & running, I'm finally in a position to return to full sparring training...yipee!

I normally use an open face headgear, but I have to wear a facebar for the first couple of months to ease in.

A friend of mine gave me the Cleto Reyes Steel Bar headgear. My nose is at least one inch from the facebar & provides great support. I did 5 * 3 mins rounds last week & was caught loads full on the face early on in the spar and it didnt even touch my nose. Later on in the session the velcro strap at the back kept coming loose and the facebar started to move a bit and touch my nose which hurt a little.
Also the leather protection around the sides is not great & the all over feel of the headgear is quite tough.

So I'm after a headgear that will provide additional cushioned protection all over & still keep my nose well away from the facebar. Considering 2 few options (money no object):

1) Winning FG 5000 - I havent found a bad review online for this product! I'm keen on the comfortable synthetic leather & extra all over protected cushioning. But from the pictures it looks like the nose might touch the facebar?

2) Fighting Sports No Contact - This looks like a fabulously protected headgear, although looks a little on the big side from this review on youtube Fighting sports no contact headgear - YouTube
When he puts the headgear on halfway through, check out how small his head looks!

Any advice and help is appreciated :-)
Thanks
Daniel

The general view on this forum is that Winning makes the best headgear. Also, the Fighting headgear is very large, giving your sparring partner more surface area to hit.

If the price of the Winning headgear is to high for you take a look at the Ring-to-Cage one.

does anybody have experience with the reyes full headgear? This seems pretty big as well. I would like to know the difference in overall size with the winning model.

I say post this question in the Title Boxing/Title MMA thread for Wes. I'm sure there's plenty good headgear out there without having to shell out $500 for Winning. I myself am looking for something light with decent nose coverage without going full face or facebar and decided on the title platinum training.

Reviewed the Ring to Cage and there were a few mixed reviews on this one.
I like the price & the green colour however!

Does anyone use the Winning Headgear? and can they say that their nose doesnt get touched by the facebar?

I had one, sold it again because I prefer the FG 2900 (no facebar). The FG 5000 offers excellent protection, your nose won't take any damage if it sits tight on your head and you get the right size. If you take a big blow right on the facebar it might touch your nose and stuff but it's not gonna break it or anything.

I have an FG-5000. No bloody noses so far.

In the gym, we've got a Fighting Sports face-saver headgear. I watched someone's nose get busted up sparring with that. He was a bigger guy (bigger head) too. So I'd recommend against it.

I fervently believe in headgear that is not one-size-fits-all.

I'm curious as well. I got popped in sparring on friday night and my nose was bleeding. Went and slept over at my girlfriends house and woke up and bled on her pillow in my sleep

-Where would I get Winning headgear in Canada? Sadly Rival doesn't have anything of the sort. I'm not sure of my size and I don't wanna order online blindly.

You might want to check out the everlast safe-max headgear as well. Haven't used it myself, but a few guys in my gym spar with it, and so far I haven't seen anyone get rocked/injured too badly. Looks very similar to the fg-5000, and seems to have gotten pretty positive reviews online despite everlast's recent reputation.

the warrior-one headgear is another good choice. Drawback is you'll tire a bit faster than normal since the breathing space is less compared to regular headgear.
