I'm moving to Atlanta and want to find a good bjj school. I'm looking for a gym that is the best for a beginner and stresses fundamentals. I've looked into Alliance, Unit 2, and X3.

Are there better gyms out there, or are these it? Which is the best?

What is best for you may not be the same as others. You really need to just go try them out.

Yeah, I understand that, but I'd like some information on some gyms outside of the gyms themselves.

I've heard a lot of good stuff about X3, and I doubt you could go wrong with Alliance HQ.
The thing about metro Atlanta, it's a bitch to get around. Commute and convenience will play a big role in your choice.

I train at 4.0 martial arts in sandy springs. Head instructor came from alliance. Small gym, but by far the best instruction I've ever had! Always happy to have drop ins if you want to try it out!

one of my old instructors is a black belt from Alliance HQ. pound-for-pound best guy i've ever rolled with.

I used to train at Alliance about 10 years ago...I was pleased with the program, school, etc. If I were back in ATL that is where I would go to train.

I dropped in at Alliance when Cobrinha was the instructor. They were very accommodating and the instruction was top notch. All the students were tough. I would train there if I lived in the area.

I don't know how far you are from Woodstock, Ga. but check out Atlanta Martial Arts Center. I think they have 3 BB that teach/train there. The head instructor/owner is a BB under Pedro Sauer who is heavy on fundamentals and he is also one of Erik Paulsons top guys in his combat submission wrestling program. Erik is there a lot

Alliance HQ speaks for itself, but I would also check out Buckhead Jiu Jitsu run by Sam Joseph. Relatively new school but Sam is a great guy and runs an awesome program.

Alliance is way up there in Sandy Springs and traffic in Atlanta is awful, so where you will be living/working and how much of a commute you are willing to make should factor in. Buckhead is a bit more centrally located.

From everything I've read, Alliance seems like a sure thing. However, it would be 20 minutes from my new place without traffic and having to jump on 400 north around rush hour is my biggest hold up with them. Roberto Traven's school is ten minutes from my place in the city, but I just don't know if they put as much emphasis on beginners classes that it seems Alliance does.

I haven't trained at either place yet, but I have visited both and spoke with the people at each.

American Top Team Atlanta. Very high level gym with world champs and medalists at various belt levels. You also have Jucao, Douglas Lima, Dhiego Lima, Raphael Assuncao, as well as countless other big names from BJJ and MMA, that stop in to train. It's one of the things that makes ATT such a great place to train.

Tough choices. Lived in ATL for 20+ years. Have trained at most of the schools listed above. All great options, especially Alliance, Unit2, Sam Joseph's Place in Bulkhead, and ATT Atlanta with Jucao.

I'll go ahead and warn you that Traven's is HARD training - like 2x as hard as any of the other places. Intensity-wise, it's more like a wrestling room than a typical BJJ workout. The warmups alone will make you puke lol. (But really GREAT group of coaches and training partners...)

Harder than the training at Alliance HQ? That would be an interesting comparison.

Good timing with this thread, as Roan "Jucao" Carneiro (ATT Atlanta), displayed some great jiu jitsu last night, when he choked Mark Munoz unconscious at UFC 184. You really can't go wrong with any of the places mentioned though. There's lots of great training in ATL.

I haven't trained at Alliance HQ in quite a while, but when Jacare used to lead the warmups, he did a more traditional BJJ-style warmup incorporating some yoga movements that I REALLY enjoyed. let's just say I did NOT enjoy Traven's warmups lol

You mentioned fundamentals so this school is very heavy in teaching fundamental Gracie Jiu Jitsu.

There was also a mention of 4.0 martial arts which I assume you are moving somewhere near Roswell/Alpharetta based on your proximity to Alliance and Unit2 so I think that would be a really good choice for you as well.
