I really don't understand where the hype and sentiment behind Benny comes from.

Who has this dude beat?

People talk about him like he's this real scary dark horse and like he's inevitable.

But what is that based on?

At 22 and 4, if you just look at the numbers, you'd think he's an elite fighter.

But parse it out a bit -

He had a good start to his career. Can't fault him for a TKO loss to Nijem early in his run.
From 2009 to 2015 he only lost once, putting him at 12-1 entering 2016.

His best wins during this time were the always game Jim Miller and a split decision over a prime Michael Johnson. Both are middle of the pack fighters but solid wins over game opponents nonetheless.

Then he got subbed by gatekeeper Chiesa. Chiesa is the bigger dude though and hasn't looked bad at WW. The next year in 2017, Benny got KO'd by gatekeeper Edson Barboza. Finished twice, by two gatekeepers, in back to back years. In his next fight, also in 2017, he has a majority draw with a completely washed Evan Dunham. Then he gets KO'd in 42 seconds by the young Alex Hernandez. Clearly Benny was going through a real rough patch at this point.

After Beneil's rough 2017 & 2018, he began his unbeaten streak that he's on now. Winning 8 consecutive fights from 2018 to today. But again, these numbers only look impressive on the surface. Parse it out, who has he beaten from 2018 to today that warrants his hype as an elite fighter? Drakkar Klose? Carlos Diego Ferreira? Fucking Tony Ferguson in the middle of a 5 fight losing streak?

I'm being rhetorical and obviously his best win during this run has been his most recent one over Mateusz Gamrot and honestly it's probably the highest quality win in his career thus far. To me, that win is the first and only piece of evidence we've had that Beneil might be elite. If you look closely at who he's beaten and when he beat them, *as well as his losses*, his record is far less impressive than the 22-4 would suggest.

I'm looking forward to Charlie Olives reminding everyone that there's levels to this and sending Beneil back down the ladder and ending his silly grappling nerd hype train.

Name me a guy with a long win streak that only beat top guys, it doesn't exist.

When he beat Gamrot a lot of people thought he'd lose and he smoked Gamrot.
Dariush is legit.

He's highly skilled and seems to be good everywhere. Other than that I have no idea because he hasn't faced elite competition. Nobody fights a long streak of elite fighters and has a win streak, though, unless you're Jones, Silva, GSP, etc.

We'll see how well his skill set translates to higher levels of competition.

Dude, he beat Tony, Gamrot, Jim, Daren. He deserves the TS.
He beat a completely washed Tony in the middle of a 5 fight losing streak and historic downfall. Jim Miller is a legendary fighter and a career gatekeeper even in his prime. Daren Cruickshank? Lol ffs. The Gamrot win was a really good win like I said. That one win doesn't warrant a ts or prove he's elite

I don't know if overrated is the right term. I think people are just wanting someone fresh.

You are right in saying "Who has this dude beat?"
I think the more important question is, the guy is on a 5 year undefeated run, why has this dude not had the opportunity to beat anyone significant?

Difficult fight to call for me, I've picked Dariush by decision but I'm not confident at all. It's the real main event and the only real pull on the main card, or maybe the card in general.

Piping hot take, brother. Almost thought this was a troll thread.

At worst, you can knock his resume for big name wins (like many did with Islam). But the man is clearly underrated based on his skill set and the “eye test”—of how he’s performed in the cage in his most recent stretch.

We’re talking about a guy who’s legitimately a live dog against Islam. Strangely, although I think Islam’s the best in the division, Dariush might actually match up slightly better against Islam than Charles—unless Charles is due for a decline.

Also, Dariush beating Gamrot is similar to Khamzat beating Gilbert. You beat Gilbert, then IMO, you’re elite. Forget the rankings, Gamrot might actually be the 3 or 4 best fighter in the division. You beat him, you’re elite.

I like benny a lot and he is very, very good. Most of sherdog underestimated him the same way you are for the majority of his career; but mma fandom has boners for eastern euro wrestlers, so when you beat one like how dariush beat gamrot, the general opinion on you completely changes.

Dariush is very good, but it is funny how quickly the public's opinion can change on fighters.
