Been working on my kicks today and we added oblique kicks with my trainer who is a BJJ murderer black belt red stripe dude and has good stand up but I'm wondering about something.

We were working a lot on oblique kicks to the knee from my back leg. I asked him why I should be doing a kick from my back leg down on his forward knee when I can kick down on his knee from my forward leg with much more power and range.

My back leg in a conventional stance is my stronger especially when kicking but not coming from the back and down. If I do an oblique kick with my left leg the power comes from my back leg.

He's probably teaching that because its easier for more people kick with their rear leg. Front leg kicks are a unique skill set you find in karate, tkd, kung fu, and some thai boxers. most people can't do it very well.

Angles. When you're in the same stance as your opponent/training partner, the lead leg for both fighters is offset to each other. To land a push kick to the lead leg with your front leg, you need to bring it across and to your right to line it up which can be a bit of an awkward motion depending on your stance. When doing the oblique kick with your rear leg to his lead leg, the feet are already lined up right in front of each other so you simply bring your back foot straight forward to his knee. It's a nice easy motion that leaves you with good position & balance to land & recover from the strike.

in muay thai we teep the thigh, in mma these guys try to destroy the knee, which IMO is a huge douche bag move. I remember when this kick first came out to the public, it was controversial and everyone was all......... yeah its a fight bro so fuck it blah blah blah, well its a fight so let me poke your eyes out, cause its a fight broOoOo. so lame.

I dont see any thing wrong with this kick, to the thigh, but trying to destroy someones knee with this kick falls right into the category of mma douchebag mentality.

Well I'm not competing and will never compete at my age.

Kick from my front weaker leg seems a ton more natural and I was constantly doing that. Snowboard/skating I keep my weight on my rear stronger leg and I can definitely kick harder from it but front left oblique kick seems to me based on the power from my left.

Ok, thanks for the insights.

Definitely train the front leg kick! That can turn into a push kick(Mirro Chagi) to peoples forward hip to distablize them for controlling distance. If you're naturally good with your weak side by all means drill it. I'm a southpaw but always competed orthodox and trained my right side to match my left. If you are interested in sparring having a strong left side initiates tons of openings people aren't use to facing.

Like the MT guy above posted. Kicking peoples knee's is a douche move and should be a DQ. The reason more people aren't hurt with it is the kicking proficiency is so low in most cases...Not all for the pedantic sherdog argument bruh's...We're fighting for fun and sport not our lives. Try to keep your kicks in his thigh or hip.

Thanks.

I try to work on my weaker side more than my stronger for reasons you stated.

But like I said, I don't compete and will not so the only dude who gets this kick is an aggressor. And I get in fights once a year or less.

Going to buy some shin guards.

its a great self defense move, i just dont feel it belongs in the ring or cage, its not a sport move.
Agreed man!

2 many surgeries just training and competing the sport way, no one needs to try to break more joints to smack each other around competitively.

First time I saw JJ do it, I shook my head in disgust, but I'm glad he's such a piss poor non MMA striker he doesn't have the mechanics and timing behind it to do real damage to guys.

Careful of the legalities of even thinking about maiming someone like that.

Unless U r experienced in the past with getting away with grievous bodily injury and aggravated assault charges...

Everything changes when Medi is called and there's a file of injuries sustained that LEO gets.

If LEO interview witnesses at the scene or pull CCTV footage and find out you're training and pass it on to an ambitious PA, you're criminally fucked even only with lawyers fees to defend a rightful self defense.

Only times I get in fights is defending a girl or if somebody attacks me first.

And I am a bar admitted lawyer.

It's not like my 41 year old leg kick is going to qualify as assault with a deadly weapon...
