Does anyone here ever try for an Axe Kick or Hook Kick while sparring???? I have tryed Axe a few times but its only worked like once or twice.

ive tried both and personally i like the hook kick better. BUT when i was in tae kwon do my instructor kicked me right in the face with a snapping axe kick and i have to say it was quite effective. but i think if you arent at that level a hook is easier to land.

I;ve never tried a hook kick because firstly were not taught them in MT and secondly it's a dangerous kick to throw. I guess its just like over extending the teep and then kicking down with the heel onto the opponents face/shoulders instead of stamping out with the ball of the foot like on a teep.
Never done it though because I think they are probably technically harder than they look, and they are quite dangerous to partners.

I';ve throw millions of hook kicks, They are basically like side kicks but rotating your foot and connecting with the heel, Instead of the straight approach of the side kick.
They are not as effective as a simple teep or roundhouse in normal situations though.

I am not too big a fan of either....for MMA. I would use the axe kick to strike a downed opponent, but the hook is too easy to counter and end up on the ground, IMO.

I was in four fights in the mid 90's. I went two and two.

The final fight, I faced a guy who had great kicks. He landed a brutal axe on me that broke my collarbone after bouncing off the side of my noodle.

I had to get treated at the hospital, where I had a seizure, and have had a seizure disorder ever since which I control with daily medication.

So, no, I never attempted an axe kick, but I tried on one and it fit me perfectly.

i use the hook-kick sometimes when we spar. but never in a serious situation (fighting or self defense)

I use the lead leg ax kick once in a while on guy's who carry a really high/tight guard to knock their gloves down (drop it on the lead shoulder or forearm) and then follow it forward with a straight right hand. I have only done it in sparring, but it does work well if used very sparingly. I am a real lanky guy too and that helps.

Ive never thought of doing that, brilliant lol ima try that one time.

I really like to do Axe kick, although I almost never succeed with it.. I love to throw it though :P

Yo, dude. 1980 just called. Jean-Yves Theriault wants his Full Contact moves back. :icon_lol:

I think the axe kick sucks. Ill admit I'm not great at throwing it but it just seems stupid to me, unless the dude is on his back. I think another one of the dumbest and least effective kicks I have seen is the crescent kick.

LOL!!!! The Canadian Iceman! He was pretty good with that ax kick though....... almost as good as ole Andy Hug. :icon_lol:

For those of you who don't know about the original iceman...... here ya go

The hook kick is much better to me. An axe kick is only great if you are super flexible like Andy Hug was.

Haha ya, they use that alot in Kung Fu, or at least the place I had went to did.

yes ive used both sucessfully at the mma gym i was at

they are not dangerous or stupid kicks to throw unless you throw them haphazardly:icon_chee

dude... holy fucking shit? hope it gets better man.

I trained kung fu and karate so I have a pretty strong axe kick (i can pretty much do any kick, if only i knew the ground as well as i do kicking :) )

heres me joking around with it (i can do it prettier but this is how i modified it for mma (chin tucked in, legs slightly bent even though i can fully extend both and look all showy, but this is the ugly practical axe kick ive designed) if it were animated youd see that i gaurd my face after this frame, i dont leave my face out there like that

Dude! are you actually doing that in a pair of jeans? That is impressive! It makes me cringe in fear of the pain of a serious groin injury just looking at it!

There was a thread on him here, in '08 it seems http://www.sherdog.net/forums/f42/original-iceman-jean-yves-theriault-756726/

I still say my man Don Wilson won that fight, but I am biased too. The Iceman was a bad cat, no doubt about it.

The way he handled Bob "Thunder" Thurman in both fights was impressive as hell. And I agree with Doughbelly about him being a K-1 champ if he fought there. He had 2 wins over Ernesto Hoost, a K-1 legend.

I wouldn't do it against a good fighter, it leaves you open for a lovely counter.
