UFC boss open to signing Ben Askren, who seems less than flattered

I honestly don't think he's all that interested in fighting guys who can strike and actually defend a takedown. He just took a golden opportunity to re-open negotiations and pissed all over it. I guess we can all be excited to see him fight Baroni, then maybe a Suzuki rematch, then a debuting TKD black belt. Should be enthralling.

Can you blame him after how bad they dissed him last year for no good reason?

I don't really blame Dana for wanting to see him fight a guy with one iota of takedown defense before bringing him into a division packed with guys who can wrestle and strike.

Now he gets a window, and immediately slams it shut. I guess Ben's the sensitive type.

So what's he going to do now? Hope OneFC grows to be a legitimate competitor to the UFC? Hope OneFC will bring in some internationally know world beater for Askren to beat so the masses will be clamoring to see him fight in the UFC?

No, he pissed it away, because deep down I think Askren would just rather be comfortable.

I don't think that at all, he's just not going to suck up to Dana simply for him saying they would consider bringing him in. Askren actually has some backbone because he's said many times he doesn't need the sport to make a living

Well he could have just said NOTHING and re-opened negotiations like a professional, without feeling the need to emote on Twitter. That wouldn't have necessarily been kissing ass.

Jay Hieron

...then he signed Jay Hieron

...and two fighters who lost to Jay Hieron.

GSP should just come back and fight Askren in a non title main event

He could have but he's an opinionated guy. Watching all these scrubs fight on UFC prelims while Dana said he needed to prove himself...I just think he can't help being like "oh shove it Baldy". Bringing him in while him and DW potshot each other would make for a funny storyline of sorts though

The Jay Hieron who did this to Askren?

Then proceeded to put up a goose egg in the UFC, including getting blown out in under a minute by Woodley?

Then Askren wants to act all like he's King Shit, and should be given the superstar treatment as soon as he cuts ties with Bellator?

Yeah, I can't see WHY Dana would be on the fence about this guy.

Askren is quite boring so I don't care if he ever fights in the UFC

Yes, who cares ? Tito and Barnett had way worst relations with Dana and still got to fight in the UFC.

you do understand he's within a 6 fight contract where he's making very good money which the uFC didnt wanna offer him he cant just up and leave! he'll have 3 more fights then he'll have more bargaining power with the UFC! they would be idiots not to sign him. Also Askren isnt really interested in fighting on ...I have heard him speak of retirement.... I hope he doesn't though.

I never argued that he didn't win the fight, dummy. What I argued is that it's not a win that gave him any significant leverage in negotiations. Especially considering that Hieron, after lumping up Askren in a split loss, got easily handled by Ellenberger, and obliterated by Woodley.

Hieron sucks for getting KO'ed by Woodley and losing a close decision to ellenberger?

wtf?

askren's wrestling looked relatively weak in that fight, but people forget askren outstruck hieron.

Dana was adamant that he wasn't interested in signing Ben Askren before he even met with Zuffa, and according to Ben, they didn't even negotiate a contract.

Misconception or truth?: Askren priced himself out of a UFC contract

The talks never got as far as specific numbers, said Askren.

The tete-a-tete took place in UFC owner Zuffa's Las Vegas office in late November, a few days after welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre narrowly escaped with a split-decision victory over Johnny Hendricks and planted the seeds for what would become his title-vacating sabbatical from the sport in December. UFC majority owner Lorenzo Fertitta and a few others were in attendance with Askren and his manager, DeWayne Zinkin; minority owner and president Dana White sat in via teleconference. Askren said the precursory talks went well and that specific scenarios were discussed, though he wouldn't elaborate on them for confidentiality reasons.

"I left with the impression that we were going to get it done," said Askren. "Later that night, they called back to say they weren't interested anymore. I thought I was going to the UFC. How could they not sign a former champion of the number-two promotion who's ranked top ten in every imaginable ranking?"

Had the negotiations progressed to figures, Askren would like to think he'd have been offered something commensurate with his market value, but wasn't expecting the windfall that former Bellator champion Hector Lombard received in April 2012, when he became the first rival titleholder to defect to the UFC's welterweight division. According to reports, Lombard was paid an astronomical $400,000 signing bonus, $300,000 for his first bout and offered a percentage of profits from pay-per-views on which he appeared.

Askren said he wouldn't have expected such bloated numbers.

"I have other sources of income and if they had said eight [thousand] and eight [thousand win bonus pay], I would have told them to f--- off, but I'm not going to say I need Hector Lombard money," he said. "If the offer had been anywhere within the point of reason, I would have been game."

Yeah rick story should be ww champ, he fucking beat johny. MMath etc ftw.

Also what you talking about leverage, UFC never made any offers.

I fucking love askren doesnt kiss danas ass, let the bald fuck have it. Dana started to act unprofessional, the only way he ever does, so its granted people act similarly towards him. And if UFC sometime wants askren, fertittas are gonna shut dana the manchild up, like they always do.

According to Ben lol
According to Dana, Askren is not UFC level and needs to work his way up in the minors. Sound better? I guess someone forgot to tell him that Ben Saunders was destroyed by Lima. Bugger must have slipped through the cracks. They should kick him out and take back his POTN bonus.
