Everyone should watch the documentary 'Senna', it is fantastic.

Agreed, the documentary is fantastic.

The emotion before and after Senna's death was crazy, I had no clue a driver died a day before Senna.

So Senna was apparently the greatest F1 driver of all time (I was informed that he was probably the best or at least "in the room" in another thread) while Dale Earnhardt was the greatest NASCAR driver of all time, and they both died racing.

Not a sport for the faint of heart.

RIP

He may not have had the best race craft, but he was true to himself

At least they went out on top.

Same with Jim Clark- another top 3 all timer in F1.

Honestly, I've never understood the absolute adulation Senna gets.

In Brazil, he's treated like a national hero. A TRUE national hero, like a civil rights pioneer, or slavery abolitionist or champion of democracy or something.

I remember hearing a Brazilian athlete that had just won gold at the Olympics (or maybe a UFC/Pride belt?) and he gave an emotional speech and started thanking his trainers, friends, family, community and then "the spirit of Ayrton Senna" or something.

Yesterday, some Brazilian teams (maybe the whole league?) paid homage to him before the start of the game.

I don't get it. Someone enlighten me, please.

He's not saying he's a Brazilian hero, jabroni. He's asking WHY he's a Brazilian hero.

Out of the top of my head, I think it has to do a lot to do not only with how he won at F1, but when he won.

Brazil was in the deep fried shitter in the end of 80's after the dictatorship. And their usual solace, their national football/soccer team, was on a low point.

So you see this guy besmirching everyone on the track and winning races and titles, driving like a posessed man going for the win, pouring charisma out of his ass and showing pride for his colors...people were gonna be drawn to him. He was the hero the Brazilians needed in the darkest hour.

Despite coming from a wealthy family (so...yeah, a playboy), he felt proud of being Brazilian, and being their people's champion. Compare that with someone like Piquet, that also was a F1 champion, but gave the vibe that he felt embarrasment for being Brazilian.

Still remember it the day it happened, well time-wise, due to the zones i didn't find out till the morning, but yeah, back then he was my favorite F1 driver. I actually got turned onto him via a video-game way back lol.

R.I.P.

Oh most definitely, Earnhardt could have theoretically survived the crash if he chose to wear the HANS neck brace device. However at the time it wasn't mandatory for drivers to wear it and he found it uncomfortable thus he chose to never wear it. After the crash they made it mandatory for all drivers. Lastly Daytona didn't have safer barriers in place which would have saved Dale's life. All oval tracks since the crash have SAFER barriers in place.

Will never forget watching him drive that stick shift 1200hp twin turbo honda through the streets of Monaco....and will never forget the day he died...

Senna was know for celebrating his wins waving the brazilian flag inside the cockpit after finishing tne race...Just saw an interview yesterday with his agent who said that at imola that weekend he requested a flag from Austria to pay his respects to ratzenberguer in case he won the race...

The better you are, the faster you are, the closer you are to a fatal mistake.
