How do you guys deal with this? I often feel like I can continue to squeeze and get a crank but that's shitty. I've seen an Americana transition that looks interesting, but I'm not sure how high percentage that is. What do you guys do against this defense? Do you abandon the choke altogether and move on to something else or are there little things you can do to get a clean choke?

When I have an arm triangle I rarely abandon it for anything but the back or the Ezekiel. Honestly, if your choking angle is right, you can often choke right through the phone defense. The better defense is the "hand on cheek" defense, where they actually place their palm on their own face. Newly promoted black belt Seph Smith showed me that defense, and at the end I'll link a video of him using it. He also showed me the best arm triangle finish I've seen so far.

Forgot any crazy grips. Stay gable gripped (palm to palm no thumbs), and stay hip-to-hip, sprawling as low to the floor as you can. Try and place your choking arm's elbow on the mat, and they should be tapping. If they don't tap after a while and the phone defense is on, keep your head close to theirs and your choking arm tight, and let go of your far hand and just "hang up the phone" and push the arm back across their face and re-grip.

I'm sure you'll get plenty of other good advice. Hope it works out for ya.

lift and take there back, go to mount and try something else, but really the answer the phone defense is a not a great defense and if you keep the pressure you can get the tap.

Stann isnt doing the "talk on the phone correctly", he needed to have his hand in front of his ear for it to work. It does indeed work as long as you can handle the pain of your hand smashing your own face.

That man has a pepsi logo on his shoulder, that's retarded.

I went from arm triangle to baseball choke tonight. Didnt get either cuz I was rolling with a fucking monster, but one day I will get him :)

Did I miss the link? I'd be interested in seeing it.

Anyway, OP:

I found Jeff Rockwell's video about no-gi chokes very helpful for finishing the arm triangle. Here is the portion where he (1) demonstrates a finish very similar to what Drew just mentioned and (2) shows an effective counter if your opponent tries to defend by answering the phone or grabbing his knee: No Gi Choke Series, Part 1 - YouTube

Enjoy.

My professor covered this position today, no gi. He showed us the shoulder lock counter, where the non choking hand grabs the meaty part of your opponent's hand and pull it away from his head while your head is pushing his elbow towards his body.
Although he prefers, like Drew stated, to finish the defended choke by sliding into a scarf hold position, getting more of his body against the arm. I have had some success using his hand like a gear shifter- up & over his head, across his face- then re-gripped to finish the choke.

For me the "answer the phone" defense is worse than the choke, I just end up getting the shit cranked out of my neck (possibly because my neck is reasonably long) and tapped anyway. As for when someone does when I'm applying to choke I just make sure the choking arm is tight with no space, and like someone else mention I take my other hand and drag their hand off their ear then finish the choke. In my experience at least its been a pretty crappy defense.

Use a gable grip instead of a figure four. With the gable grip, the hand that is not under the head is now free to push the telephone defense off their head. Then simply regrip and choke.

I just finish it as a neck crank. A neck crank with a choke is legal under IBJJF rules, gi or no-gi.

The best defense is to gable grip around your own leg and kick forward, then follow it up with rolling backwards with the momentum for an escape. The Telephone is shitty and just turns a choke into a crank.

i would make sure the choking forearm is flat on the mat, then have the same side shoulder push down to the armpit and then up. that kind of pushes the shoulder closer to the artery which is what you wanted in the first place. no need to squeeze too crazy, he wouldn't be able to do anything from there anyway so long as you dont get back in his guard.
