i'm just curious if a canvas shoe is a good running shoe. i saw sylvester stallone running in them in rocky balboa. my feet always hurt after i run i'm flatfooted

They used a lot of CGI to pull off that movie

On a more serious note. You can run in anything, hell you can even run barefoot if you want. However you do run though, just make sure it is comfortable and you can handle it. If canvas shoes are hurting your feet, which isn't hard to believe why, then you should look for a shoe that offer you more support. The more comfortablere your feet you the longer you will be able to run without your feet hurting.

damn so if i was to go down to say, big 5 sporting goods, what shoe is good?

Chuck Taylors where originally Basketball shoes. And its nice to know allot of people have these shoes. Shoes off how unique you are ( I hate chuck Taylors )

The Chuck Taylor All Star is almost 100 years old... so no... it's not a good running shoe. I run in Nike Free 5.0, Nike Shox, and Nike Air Max 180. I have wide feet and these shoes fit best, Saucony, Asics, and Mizuno are generally thought of as being better shoes for running in terms of durability. The Nike Free shoes have done quite a good job at strengthening my feet as I was prone to foot and ankle injuries before I started using them.

Oh, and also... Sylvester Stallone running in the Chuck's in Rocky Balboa was a throwback to the training scene from the original Rocky movie... and keep in mind, part of Rocky's charm was that he was poor... so, not only were there a lot less options in running shoes back when the original movie was made, but he was also running in the cheapest shoes possible.

BTW, I call shenanigans on this post.

Depends on what kind of runner you are (neutral, pronator, supinator). Neutral runners generally do not have any mechanical problems when running. Pronators (generally low arch/flat feet) roll their feet inwards, causing stress to the knees and ankles.. which leads to other problems. Supinators (generally high arch) do not roll their feet enough, thus their heels, knees and hips take a lot of impact shock.

Since you are flat-footed, you are most likely a pronator. You want a shoe with a denser/stiffer material (usually it will be gray) on the inner side of the shoe (same side as arch) to keep you from rolling inward excessively. Typically, the Brooks Beast... Asics Kayano... are good. You want a "motion control" type running shoe.

Stay away from Nike Air.. or a "cushion" shoe. Those are more for supinators. This is probably more info then you wanted, but good luck with it.

Also, go to a running shoe store. The guy at Big 5 won't know and will just sell you anything.

its info i want actually.
i have a shit load of shoes from my ol days of working in footlocker and other stores.
most of my collection are shox and air max's. Even tho i do know a bit about the type of shoes needed for different feet. Its been so long, i have forgotten to even consider this....i've recently started running, and i'm using the nike 360's which feel great so far.

i got flat feet. So far it hasnt affected anything yet. But i will be on the look out for the motion control nikes...i know they're out there....

TBH tho, i never had any problems with shoes when it came to running before. 'cept for shin splints back in the HS rugby days where we ran in our cleets on the track!

time will tell whether this will catch up to me and give me nagging injuries

seriously? I think if you ran hard enough in Chuck Taylor's you'd break your ankles. Running shoes are called running shoes for a reason, and Chuck Taylors are not for the same.

BTW Chuck Taylor's? Are you a wanna be skater punk from 5 years ago? Be a little more creative man.

Heh... Chuck Taylors will always be a part of indie rock culture...

Check out some basketball games from the 60s... everyone is wearing Chucks. It's kinda creepy.

A couple days ago I saw some homeless guy wearing a pair of Batman Chuck Taylors I had a pair of when I was nine.

I like the Shox with the Free's comming in a close second

I'm a big-time fan of the Frees now, but I wouldn't do anything more than one or two miles on them. For everything else, there is Asics. I underpronate a bit so I ride in the Nimbus VIIIs.

i need to check out the frees to see what all the fuss is about for running
i believe i have a pair....which is stored away in my collection until my next vacation....but its not the latest ones that are out there...i believe mine are the 7.0's

i always looked at lightweight meshy shoes like the frees as purely summer shoes....like the ol' Kukini's (I wish they'd re-release them) or the prestos. Comfy and breathable, but never loooked like it has much support for any vigorous activity, and am still skeptical about using them for running over my other runners

They aren't your every day running shoes... definitely intended for sporadic use. In fact, when you get a pair now they come with a training schedule to get your feet used to them. Fortunately, I have a dirt track literally across the street from my apartment... using them for every day running or running on pavement probably isn't such a great idea.

they're cheap. good with dickies and jeans. i wear them to the gym when i'm not running

^ they're really not the best training shoe either.

Dickies and Chuck Taylors, your stylin' and profilin' ; )

yup, chucks are good lifting shoes due to there lack of cushioning, give you a nice frim base to work from.

They arent good running shoes at all though.

plus I like them, but then Im a actual skater punk ( well, maybe getting a tad old for that at 25, but who gives a shit :P )

Actually, Nike does make motion-control shoes, just not enough of them. Their best one currently is the Air Equalon+.

If you want to recapture the spirit of the old ABA, wear a pair of Chuck Taylors, short shorts, and a headband and hit the basketball court. You can only do that with the Chucks.
