I've always been under the assumption that the UFC does whatever they want and championns have no guarantee of rematches. Not like in boxing where Deontay Wilder had a clause in his contract and was able to stop Tyson Fury from fighting Joshua by taking him to court.

Does anyone know if any UFC fighters have it in contracts or has it always been up to the UFC and Dana? Maybe McGregor had that kind of leverage? Even GSP wasn't guaranteed rematches at times. It was all at the whim of Dana.

Bump cuz I'd like to know if anyone has info on how the UFC does rematches,

Highly doubt the UFC includes rematch clauses in their champions contracts. It’s clear the UFC does whatever they want and adding a rematch clause gives too much leverage to their fighter. The UFC is all about putting more money in exec pockets. Can you imagine if rose namajunes had a rematch clause in her contract. The UFC isn’t about to book that shit show a third time.

Again, I’m not certain, but maybe like 99% sure.

Two guys that should've gotten rematches were Luke and Aldo. I got a peek at Conor's contract once. This is what it said...................

Conor McGregor UFC Contract

I do whatever the fook I want.

x.....signed Conor McGregor

Here's how Eddie Alverez's title shot was written into his promotional agreement.

ZUFFA and Fighter intend for fighter's first bout, under this agreement, to be for the UFC lightweight title and for said title bout to occur before the end of March of 2013

So yes, you can have title fights built into your contract. However, they go into more detail about how this is supposed to play itself out.

So long as Fighter and then current UFC lightweight champion is medically and/or otherwise able to compete by such date.

They go into further detail about what happens if said bout is unable to take place

For the avoidance of doubt, however, regardless of whether fighter's first bout is for the lightweight title and occurs before march 2013, in addition to the fighters purse.....etc etc

Basically even if the title fight falls though, Eddie was still going to receive PPV points on the first bout and each title fight thereafter.

So the answer to your question is yes, fighters can have some type of title fight built into their contract. I can't imagine it's done very lightly but it no doubt happens.

I mean.. You can put anything you want in a contract. Like Dustin beating Conor by tko in the second fight. It was reported that if Dustin tko’d Conor there would be a trilogy and Dustin would get ppv points for the third fight. Dustin made $millions in the trilogy fight. 1.8M ppv sold.

But no. Auto rematches are not part of UFC contracts 99.999999% of the time.

It would make sense for a dominant champ to have that. Instant rematch if they lose their title.

Not sure though. Also curious and I somehow doubt it

Yes, curiosity is why I posted this. I suppose it's possible some champions could do this but hard to see anyone in the UFC outside of maybe Conor who has that kind of leverage.
Aldo is a perfect example. He never got a rematch and he was a dominant champ and many people thought Conor's win was fluky enough to deserve one.

I also found this old article talking about Anderson Silva's rematch with Weidman and the fact GSP was never promised one. https://www.mmaweekly.com/dana-whit...e-an-immediate-rematch-if-he-loses-at-ufc-167

Also saw an ESPN article about Jones when he turned down the short-notice fight with Sonneon. He had no rematch clause in his contract. Reporters asked if that would have made a difference in his taking that short-notice fight. He said no but I thought it was telling that he didn't have one.

In these cases even those dominant champs had no guarantees other than Dana's whim and nothing was contracted.

The reason I asked was I was watching lastnight's fights with a friend who seemed to think Pena would get another rematch based on nothing more than the fact she was champion and her contract would guarantee it. I've had the same argument with him before when he insisted Stipe would get a rematch with Ngannou. We all know he went on to fight Gane and Stipe has never been guaranteed anything. I told him the UFC is not boxing where champs try to get rematch clauses in their contracts. He then went on to basically call me a know-it-all and "whatever" and he will continue believing what he wants. He used the talk of another rematch in the cage as proof that he was right. lol

It's really mostly a thing between two top fighters who draw so much money that they can demand such clauses and get them granted. That is why it's not prevalent in mma.

Pena was not a dominant champ by the fact she never defended the belt. In what world could she get an instant rematch?

I dont get your friend. Even if it was a split decision win for Amanda I dont think at all the UFC would book a rubbermatch. They prefer Amanda as champ and also double champ.

Yup. That's my point. Even dominant champs in the UFC aren't guaranteed rematches and many (especially now) consider Pena's win a fluke.

My view is the UFC books rematches when it makes monitary sense because the fights were exciting and a rematch will sell. Not because champions have some imaginary rematch clause.

I guess It's possible some fighters have gotten rematch clauses in contracts but I don't know that even Conor has it written in. He's the only guy in the UFC I could see with that kind of leverage but we never saw it tested since he never lost (or defended) his titles.

I'll just quit trying to argue the point with this friend. He has this irrational belief and nothing I say is going to convince him otherwise. I sent him that piece about how even GSP and Anderson Silva got rematches at Dana's whim rather than because it was contracted and he just says "i aint reading that old shit". lol
