I'm considering buying 5 of the cheapest BJJ Gi's I can get for when I'm traveling. Found some "basic" ones for about $65. this one ----> Cheap Gi

Are $65 Gi's gonna hold up for a decent amount of time? Is there any downside to them other than the fact they are plain?

I was noticing some of the higher quality gi's have "support" with extra layers of material at the knees, although I'm not sure if that's just for holding the gi together, or to actually protect the knees, or marketing hype.

Any thoughts?

Every cheap gi is different. The JJPG gi you posted is cheap because not only is it plain, it's also thin and uses basic materials and craftsmanship (400GSM single weave top, 10 oz stiff cotton canvas pants). This translates mainly to potentially reduced comfort and durability compared to higher end models, plus greater susceptibility to opponents' grips. The only other thing I'd be concerned about is that I can't see how far down the knee reinforcements go on the pants; if they don't go far enough, they may be useless when you're kneeling and the pants material gets hiked up.

Still, the price is bargain basement, even cheaper than the Fuji All Around which is considered the workhorse entry-level gi. Conversely, I've purchased a much higher-end competition gi, the OTM SLC420, for $75 on special. Caveat emptor.

I've seen cheap gis that were made extremely well, and higher priced gis that were complete shit.

Always good to ask questions before you buy.

I've seen some cheap judo his that seem to work just fine and last awhile.

I got one similiar to the gi in the link, didn't last 1 year.

The Fuji entry-level gi is actually my preferred gi after 3 years. Maaaaaaaybe it's a little more susceptible to staining and giving my rug burn, but it's more comfortable and durable than my 2 other $120-$140 gis. I'd recommend the Fuji to anyone. I got mine for like $90.

Good info, thanks! I actually used to live fairly close to JJPG and would have been able to personally go in and take a look at the gi's they have in stock, but alas, no more sunny So Cal weather for me. :icon_cry2

Expensive GIs are bad.... nothing justifies current pricing so everything over... lets say 120 is overpriced (unless its woven by elven virgins from spiders silk... compared to every damn gi thats made in Pakistan or China)

In many cases, you really get out of a gi what you put into it.

One thing that everybody probably knows, but should be said anyway, is that the quality of your gi will not at all make you a better or worse grappler. I've run the gamut on cheap to expensive gis in my time, and I can honestly say that the quality of the gi did not make a difference in my ability.

Now keeping in mind, I did do research on all of the more expensive gis that I've bought, and as a result never owned an expensive gi that turned out to be low quality. I've used an absolute no-name brand at the start, moved through Atama and Koral, and as other brands started to exist, tried some of them. There are noticeable differences in quality in those brands and those reflect shelf life.

Personally, I wear two brands of gi for training and for competing. Fushida is a fantastic gi company, but my go-to as of late is Origin. Fushida is considerably less expensive, but Origin's fit and quality make them my personal favorite (plus, they make their gis in the US). My Fushida and Origin gis both have so far lasted me several years and they don't appear to be anywhere near their last legs.

With more expensive gis, as long as you research them and make sure that they're quality, they will last your years if you take care of it. The cheaper ones will eventually fall apart, often in short order. I've had a cheaper gi last me literally less than a year, but some of my higher quality gis have lasted me 4, 5 or 6 years and they're still going strong.

It's best to do your research. Atama makes good gis, but they aren't reinforced as much as some of the others are. My Atama lasted 3 years. Kingz makes quality gis as well, though I don't own one. Gorilla Fight Wear is also good. Origin, my favorite, is a premium-priced gi, but I've had my first one for 4 years and it's still going strong. And Fushida also have very high quality gis and the two that I own, 3 and 4 years old, are also going strong.

I would recommend getting a better quality gi than one that is $65. I would recommend two, or three, with a higher weave count (think Dragonweave, Gold weave, or a simple double weave) and strong, reinforced pants. Two or three of those, with good washing, will cost you less in the long term and can fit very easily and quickly into your rotation.

This. Do your homework. I have a fushida comprs, kingz comp 450, padilla and sons gold weave, tatami 4.0 and a fuji single.

Those are all various prices. The fuji and padilla being the cheapest. Both good gi's but not as fitted as the previous 3. which cost a bit more but aren't really that expensive at all. I got my Tatami for like 110$

I think I paid $70 for my HCK years ago. That thing was a tough gi.

EDIT: Been out of the game for a while, didn't realize HCK's quality isn't what it used to be. Too bad, it was my favorite gi.

I was at JJPG last week and looked at that $65 gi. Definitely spend your money on the Fuji instead. The fit of that JJPG gi was weird.

Yikes! Those Origin Gis are straight up next level.

The thing about buying Gis is that there are so many brands out there that it is overwhelming. Mostly because all of these upstart companies are out there, or simply lesser known companies.

Tatami, Koral, Atama, Fuji, Gameness. These are the brands that I heard of first.

I refuse to buy a Gameness Gi because that font they use for their logo is dated so bad.
