Anyone ever purchase a training dvd?

rafael cordeiro is a kickboxing coach...
Whoops. Saw BJJ fanatics and thought so.

DVDs like other mediums are nice ways to see certain techniques or tactics, but I wouldn't take that over anything your coach normally prescribes. Before I started years back I had this one called "crazy monkey", it wasn't bad, alot eventually got covered as I progressed in the gym once I joined. Depending on how advanced you are, I'd stick with what your coach taught you or around the similar level of skill. Basics are the foundations.

At this point lots of shadow boxing is going to be the main thing you can do for skillework. If you have access to a heavybag or double end bag, you have more luxuries to work with.

Why don’t you buy it and report back. At the very least you’ll learn novel forms for certain techniques or new combos

You cant learn basic fundamentals from a DVD if you are a beginner. And allready know the fundamentals, then you dont need the instructional anyway.

My point? Most instructional videos try to reach out to the beginners. And i get it. It make sense. Bigger market. More money.

But i think the people who would actually get some real skills out of a video, would be the intermediate martial artist. If the video was more advanced then just a basic fundamental video.

Im by no means a beginner but I haven’t fought in a striking match about 8 years so I’m not going to pretend I’m an expert either.

I’m a fan of hammering the fundamentals though, I do this when grappling as well. Yeah I’ll work on some fancy inside ashi transitions from time to time but I firmly believe it’s the foundations that win. Well for me at least.

The best resource for learning striking online is Joe Valtellini's youtube channel. It covers everything you need to know in good detail. It's all free and it covers everything from the bare basics to more advanced things. I have nothing against Cordeiro as a coach, but you aren't going to get better information for $77 from him, than you are for free from Valtellini.

In truth though, I used to look at a lot of instructionals, but I think you find that they soon outlive their usefulness. Striking isn't like grappling where you can learn 20 different routes to the arm bar.

In striking there are just a few core principles. Lead, intercepting counter and defend then counter. Defensively there is evasion, blocking and parrying. Then you have changing levels and turning your opponent. If you understand those principles you will be successful regardless of what combinations you specifically spring together - Giorgio Petrosyan is a prime example, he uses all of those principles incredibly well and you'll very rarely see him do anything outside of basic muay thai striking technique.

I've found that instructional dvds only really became useful to me when I started coaching as a way of introducing ideas to a fighter.
