So they have time to recharge or escape danger. It adds an element of strategy into the mix, instead of just forcing them to fight like dogs in a fighting pit with nowhere else to go.

Alternately, they could make the octagon more like a proper cage that has higher walls and also a chain link ceiling. If in danger they could climb the cage to escape, hanging out in a corner like some kind of spider or baboon until they're ready to come fight again.

They could also launch attacks from the walls and drop down from the ceiling on their opponent. It would triple the amount of strategies used and make for a more exciting bout.

- Your post is under investigation.

Yea but imagine a fighter is getting beat very bad, only because he needs a minute to reset and take a few deep breaths. He calls a timeout and gets 2 minutes of rest, the round then continues and he cracks his opponent after clearing his head.
*yells timeout before passing out from a choke, armbar, leglock, etc...

See where I'm going with this?

They have. It's called eye poke and low blow

True. I prefer the elongated cage myself, it would feel very primal to see one fighter try to assert his dominance and make the other flee to a corner seemingly. In reality, however, the fleeing fighter is just biding his time, waiting to enact his revenge. Happens all the time in the animal kingdom. Revenge is a primal part of the psyche of living things.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Imagine a fighter getting cracked then he retreats up to a corner of the cage, licking his wounds and preparing a counter attack.

Would there be a limit on how many time outs a fighter can have?
If the fighters can call out a timeout every time they are in danger, the fight could very well drag out for hours

Yea I was thinking one per round for each fighter. Or in place of timeouts just have the elongated cage where a fighter can flee willingly and eat up the clock, or launch a surprise attack if ready

Wtf

Only if draws are decided by a sudden-death OT round where both fighters are blindfolded and made to fight Marco Polo-style

edit - obv each fighter would get 1 "peek" for strategic purposes
