Anybody know what these clay pottery tubes are for?

My boys and I found a bunch of these pipes made from clay pottery material while on an adventure out in the woods. They look to be at least 30+ years old, and there’s hundreds of them in a neat pile.
I’ve seen something similar to them stacked up in old wine cellars to hold the bottles, but these are too small for that , with an inside diameter of less than 3” and about 14-16” in length.
My property used to be farmland so I’d assume something irrigation related, but there’s no flange on either end so there’s no way to connect one to the next one that I can see.
Any ideas?

I'm going to guess some kind of pipe insulation

They're clay drainage tile. They don't "connect", they're buried in the ground with about a 1/2" gap between each piece, that's how the water gets in. Capillary action. Used to drain excess water from the ground. These days it's done with perforated plastic pipe.
