I saw that Matt Lindland thread and in one of the videos he was fighting Karo. Then I realized, we have had Armenians, Dagestanies and what have you but I don't recall a fighter who hailed from Greece?

I mean, they were the pioneers of Mixed Martial Arts. Way before Bruce Lee, their ancient martial arts was the Mixed Martial Arts!

Josh Barnett and the rest of AMC Pankration guys for starts

Greeks aren't very skilled at combat sports. They lack heart and discipline.

He was from Cyprus. And George Sotiropoulos was from Australia.

So the only Greek fighter I can think of is Ben "Spartacus" Askren.

yeah, he's not greek. hence why i didn't put him down. i'd have gone with mike 'the greek' bronzoulis.

The local MMA scene here is relatively small and it is plagued by many endemic problems and affected by the economy as well. Andreas Michailidis is one of the better fighters to come out of Greece but he has a BJJ background (https://www.tapology.com/fightcenter/fighters/72348-andreas-mihalidis , http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Andreas-Michailidis-65167 ) .
Pankration is its own sport (although one of the rule-sets is very close to an amateur MMA version) although, due to its greek roots, many gyms/teams advertise MMA as Pankration.

BTW Cypriots are Cypriots, not Greeks. Aussies, Canadians and others with greek names just have greek roots. They are not Greeks either (although the media would have believe otherwise here...).

is this like turkish oil wrestling???

Anthony Christodoulou had a couple of fights (definitely not in the UFC any longer).
The worst fighter i have ever seen.

did you feel a little silly asking this? An art that was out of practice for like 2000 years?

People do have pankration fights today but it’s like amateurs that are actually training mma getting their toes wet. There is no reason to train for pankration today
