We got some fights again next weekend and the main event Smith vs Rakic should be a banger. I haven’t seen many threads about this fight yet so I made one. Let’s get hyyyyped!

Aleksandar Rakic lost his last fight (split dec) against Oezdemir, but was on a roll before that. The win streak was topped off with a brutal head kick KO victory against Jimi Manuwa. Rakic made sure that MMA fans knew who he was after that one! Let’s look at it one more time... Or six more times, because why not.

I’ll type out some stuff I see in these two fighters and how I think they stack up. Let’s go!

Rakic is a promising LHW, standing 6’4” tall and is 28 years old, but that’s something anyone could see in his wiki. He’s a explosive striker with good reach, has power in both his hands and feet. He has powerful leg kicks and he likes to explode forward with powerful punches. He fights in a wide orthodox stance and is dangerous from either side.

He doesn’t set up his low kicks with punches too much, he just gauges distance, uses feints and then blasts them. He can strike in combos, but rarely ends one with a leg kick. He ended Manuwa’s lif.. night with a combo ending in a headkick.

Rakic has shown a good chin so far and can take damage without crumbling or even showing it too much. He keeps his right hand high and left hand forward to measure distance. You can see him being more offensive minded in how he strikes. In other words, he leaves himself open a fair bit when blitzing forward, but his opponents haven’t been able to capitalize in a major way.

He doesn’t look to grapple too often and has been able to stop majority of the takedowns against him with sprawling, getting the underhooks, turning angles, pushing his opponent away and obviously some footwork. He took Oezdemir down a couple of times, though, and mixed it up.

Smith is the more familiar fighter to many and has had some great performances in the last couple of years. First he KO’d Rashad Evans and Shogun (that was sad), then tapped Oezdemir before losing to Jon Jones via UD in a lackluster performance. Then he came back and tapped Alexander Gustafsson. Big names. In his last fight he was doing very well against a veteran LHW Glover Teixeira. Teixeira however took the early barrage and started to get the upper hand before finishing Smith in the 5th round.

Smith is a very good, technical and quick striker. If anyone has doubts about that they clearly haven’t watched Anthony fight much. His straight punches are so fast and accurate that it’s a treat to watch. Very good jab and excellent right straight, hooks come after if needed. Also good kicks and strike selection, he finds the right tools from his toolbox and goes after it. Leg kicks, front kicks, head kicks plus he’s very dangerous with elbows and knees too!

Unlike Rakic, Smith is a BJJ black belt. He has shown that he’s a crafty guy on the ground and has a lot of subs on his record.

”Lionheart” has a gooood chin and can take a ton of damage, he won’t break. Unless it’s a title fight against Jones, then he shells up. Damn it! Well, anyway..

How do they stack up?

It will be a very interesting striking battle. Rakic is the more powerful guy, but I’d say Smith is the better overall striker. I expect the fight to mostly stay standing, but would like to see Smith try some trips if they clinch up.

I think Smith is targeting Rakic’s lead leg early as he (Rakic) has a very wide stance and Oezdemir had success with it in the last fight. He’ll need to be careful with Rakic blitz forward attacks as he moves in fast and has a lot of power. Chew up the leg and put his quick jab out there. The ol’ 1-2 should work! Rakic will try to find success with his blitzes while staying out of punching range. He’s not afraid to throw down, but after moving in and throwing heavy he leans back while taking a couple of steps and resets.

”Lionheart” has the edge on the ground and a very dangerous clinch, so I think Rakic will try to keep his feet moving and have him just outside striking range. There he can feint to see how Anthony reacts and either blitz in with big strikes or throw a power kick with his long legs. Seriously, for a muscular guy he has some seriously long limbs!

Both guys have good cardio, but Rakic has never gone 5 rounds with anyone. So we’ll see if he tries to slow the pace down a bit or if he keeps fighting at his usual pace. How much did that Teixeira beating take out of Smith? He was spitting his teeth out mid fight and took a ton of punishment. That remains to be seen!

I give Anthony Smith the edge in this one and expect him to take the W, probably in rounds 2 or 3, via sharper striking and possibly taking it to the ground when clinching. I don’t see either guy blasting double legs in this one.

Odds
To my surprise, Rakic is a sizeable favourite betting odds wise and I’ll be placing some money on this one for sure. I think the odds should be a lot closer than this - Rakic 1,33 or -300 (I guess?) and Smith 3,40 or +240 (I guess?). I’m not too familiar with your ”freedom units” money to be made here!

I think the reason a lot of people favor rakic is because of how bad smith got beat up in his last fight. The thing is, when he got worked HARD by jones it was a similar situation and he bounced back just fine.

I think people are reading too much into smith losing vs Glover.

At the end of the day if your getting a split decision loss to Volkan you’re right in the mix, but rakics past results don’t indicate he’ll dominate the way the fight odds would make you believe

Also give me your thoughts on this match up if you have any!
Great breakdown @Spath. I’ll try and read it fully and give a better response when I’m off work.
But I’m not surprised at all that Rakic is the favorite, and I fully expect him to beat the dog snot out of Smith. If it were me, I wouldn’t lay money on Smith to win. But maybe @Zebra Cheeks has a different idea? He’s the big time successful bettor, not me...

Smith is 50/50 with most guys at LHW. I want to watch back the santos fight to see how he dealt with someone that big since rakic is huge

I love to watch Santos fight, he’s kind of like the Barboza of the LHW division!

As you said, Smith is pretty much 50/50 with almost anyone in the division. Rakic is a very good fighter but I don’t think he has earned that much yet that I would put him as a fairly large favorite. No way. Could be the Glover fight beatdown, maybe.

Interesting to see how Rakic handles the weight cut too. He’s a big dude, probably cuts a fair bit of weight. Smith is a big guy himself, but pretty slim and I don’t think he cuts too much weight usually. With the pandemic going, we’ll see if they easily make the weight or nawt..

I’d like to rewatch that as well. I do disagree a bit with your other post: I’ve always viewed Glover as a bit overrated, and current Glover is particularly old and slow. Higher-level strikers like Rumble or Gus absolutely melt Glover, and Smith got beaten half to death by him. I suppose Smith could catch Rakic in a submission or something. The betting line is probably farther apart than it should be, but something like -250 for Rakic seems about right to me. With Smith returning only 3 months after that beatdown, I don’t see this going well for him at all.

Smith losing to glover was shocking for me. I did not see a way for glover at winning that fight. Jon only landed 2 takedowns on smith out of 10 and the first two rounds were very close.

Smith got beat up by Eryk Anders. He struggles with aggressive punchers. As well as high school wrestlers too

If getting beat by rumble and gus qualifies someone as overrated, then so is everyone else at LHW.

I completely disagree, Glover is one of those dudes that doesn’t get enough credit.

I think this is a great fight for Rakic. I still he think is a top guy and he should have won vs Volkan.

Also believe people will be saying Smith needs to retire after this one.

smith is too passive because he gasses when he isn't
he has 2-2.5 good hard rounds in him
3-4 slow rounds, and he is almost always beat in the 5th.

He is better than most think on the ground though.

I've not seen as much from Rakic, but what I did looked great.

Really good thread my man.

I have already put a lot of thought into betting this fight.

My problem is, I have never been high on Smith. His loss against Jones followed 2 fights later by Glover completely overwhelming him make him a very difficult guy to want to put money behind.

That being said, I’m hesitant to bet against him.

The big question for me is not technical but mental: how can a fighter recover his confidence after a loss like he suffered?

I firmly believe we have seen loses such as he suffered often change fighters for the worse- despite their best efforts.

This one is tricky. Gun to head I would bet Rakic.

If getting beat by rumble and gus qualifies someone as overrated, then so is everyone else at LHW.

I completely disagree, Glover is one of those dudes that doesn’t get enough credit.
Hold on there partner :)
I didn’t say that’s what qualified him as being overrated—the fact that he has no jab to speak of, spams left and right overhands like a robot and looks like he’s moving underwater is what qualifies him as being overrated, along with the fact that he routinely loses to the best in the division—Jones, Davis, Rumble, Gus, Corey Anderson. He’s still a good fighter don’t get me wrong, and seems like a super nice guy. He’s on a good run now that I fully expect to end when he gets in there with Thiago Santos. He’s just a fighter who never beats the best.

Prime Rumble melts just about anyone in the division. Gus had the best performance of his career against Teixeira, but one of the worst against Smith. If you wanna play MMA math, Smith finished Gus who finished Teixeira... ;)

Teixeira is a warrior. Hell of a ground game, heavy punches, picks his punches well and excellent head movement / rolling with punches. Very crafty veteran and even if he’s slowing down a lot, he still seems to find a way to win fights against top guys. I’d say he’s a bit underrated.

I’m defensive of my point about Glover because when Anderson was going to fight walker i cited his win over texaira as a big deal because only elite talents beat Glover. Proceeded to get ganged up on Massively until I was right and walker got beat down.

He’s like Brunson. He’s never gonna be the title holder, but he’s got legitimate and well rounded skill sets. Anyone who doubts that should bet money against him routinely and see how it works out.

It is five rounds, it’s the main event.

I don’t know if this is a thing, but I sometimes feel like smith gets a really bad draw on odds because he looks so fucking terrible when he looses. I remember getting fantastic odds on him to beat shogun before he went to fight jones, and i think it was 0.7 or something. Really good return considering the result.

He just looks like a complete joke in the fetal position getting beaten down by jones, or the fight didn’t get called vs Glover so he just got canned for 5 rounds.
