I used to argue with some British soccer fans who maintained the incredibly silly argument that soccer was better than football. Their arguments ranged from soccer being the most popular sport in the world to soccer being more deserving of being called football to NFL games only featuring 11 minutes of real game play when you edit out all of the commercials, timeouts, breaks etc. they also said that the American complaint that soccer players don't score enough was a product of our sports culture which glorifies points because of our low attention spans and that soccer goals are super exciting. They didn't seem to understand how soccer could be so popular world wide and not be popular in America.

I found these arguments ridiculous and my counter is this: OK calling soccer football is more justified because you use your feet more but the sport is boring because they don't score enough. If they did more people would watch it and it isn't that American sports culture is close-minded and our attention spans are low. The rest of the world has just not been exposed to the glory of American Football. They don't understand it and that is why they can't appreciate it. Not only does American Football have a natural progression where most games feature a lot of exciting plays including scoring but once in awhile you have incredibly exciting games that go right down to the wire where you don't know who is going to win until the last seconds and the game can be decided with the very last play.

Soccer to my knowledge does not have that. A lot of games I have seen have been 0-0 for nearly the entire game and that is just boring as hell. Soccer is not the most boring sport in the world (ex. golf) but it doesn't hold a candle to American Football and that isn't even my favorite team sport (I like Basketball better). I want to run an experiment to support my point. I challenge any soccer fan here to show me the best soccer game they have seen in 2016. I mean the most exciting game. I will download it and watch it then give my critique of what I saw. Likewise I want that same person to watch an American Football game of my choosing. Download it, watch it and give your critique.

For the American Football game I select the Dallas Cowboys vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers which just came on this weekend Sunday, November 13. That should be easy to find. If you have trouble finding it I will direct you to the proper source for downloading by PM. Now find me a soccer game from this year that best represents that sport. Any one who has other requests can get in on this discussion.

I understand why a high skilled game of football wouldn't be to your taste, it takes a lot of concentration and intelligence to appreciate, almost like a good jazz song.

In the same way I child would prefer to watch Transformers over Schindler's list, its okay that you prefer a fast food entertainment like 'American football'

That's an amusing analogy but having played both sports and watched both sports its clear that there is so much more going on in Football. But if you feel that way go ahead and select the best soccer game you have seen this year and I will watch it and provide feedback so long as you watch the football game I selected and provide feedback.

Poor people in poor countries like soccer and bouncing a ball off their heads. Real men like football

"Taking a lot of concentration and intelligence to appreciate" is just a way to church up "boring as fuck"

Can you recommend a soccer game from this year that supports your argument?

Germany vs Italy in the Euro. Some Wales games from the Euro, Chelsea vs United, and others. It doesn't matter what games I post because you prefer American football, just as I prefer soccer. Neither of us will change each other's opinion.

I'm still going to prefer American Football of course but I want to see what soccer has to offer.

This is a waste of time as your already sold on American Football as its your main sport. In UK Football "soccer" is bigger than religion so it's bound to sway to what your influenced by around you. Maybe try rugby as its more similar to NFL?! . I get you find 0-0 draws boring. We find minutes of nothing for a few seconds of actual play boring . But I get it, I like NFL, but fuck me you guys are into your stats more than anything huh!

I'm trying to have an open mind and relate to a culture that isn't my own. I'm not sure what you mean by "into your stats" as American Football is all about the game play.

I get that mate and fair play to you for doing so , I just mean a lot of time in us sports such as baseball etc seems to be taken up with stats . You guys like em. That's all . I personally like American football and I think a lot of people in Europe would given the chance, but a lot of the dislike towards it isn't usually the game At all, just the gaps between plays where to be fair if you don't know wtf your watching I can appreciate would be boring as fuck . You thought about rugby before soccer? Kinda ease yourself into Euro sport? Lol

Soccer is ok.

You should watch Rugby instead, or Gaelic Football.

Just give it a chance and try not to compare apples to oranges. I'm American and grew up playing both, but had more success with soccer. btw, there's a 137 page thread about this same topic in Mayberry. Hopefully this one doesn't also deteriorate into a debate about how much America sucks :p

The reason I have more of an interest in soccer than rugby is because I am more familiar with the rules of soccer and soccer is the most popular sport in the world. Rugby is also a lot like American Football (which comes from rugby) so even if I knew the rules there is no real novelty to watching it. I could watch a rugby game but I would prefer that we stick to soccer. I played soccer once in elementary school. I had fun. The game is not complex. You can easily watch it and know what is going on. I just don't like how rare scoring a goal is which creates a lack of progression in most games which even when knowing what is going on can be quite boring. I do feel that there is a cultural difference here and the rest of the world doesn't like American Football as much because they don't understand it and were raised watching soccer. I would like to see what is considered an exciting soccer game to see what I am missing and maybe understand it a bit better.

This thread was inspired by the Cowboys vs. Steelers game on Sunday. There have been a lot of games like this over the years but this one was exceptionally good and I just thought to myself, "Does soccer really have games comparable to this?"

If they do I haven't seen them and would like to at least see one.

This thread is all about me giving it a chance! :p

I want to see an actual soccer game that best represents "soccer at its best" and preferably a game that happened this year.

I will try not to compare it to American Football I just want to watch it and see if I see the entertainment value in the game the way true fans of soccer do.

I'm not reading any of that. At no point did I even consider it. I will leave you with a DeCandre Jordan smilie<{hfved}>

Cliffnotes:

  • I want to see the best soccer match of 2016
  • I want a soccer fan to see the American football game I selected
  • After watching the games we can share our experiences and impressions of the games we watched
