Its 50/50. It is a combat sport, hard sparring is almost entirely imperative and citing Thais isnt fair because they have hundreds of fights on average. If you want fighters to develop good instincts, be technical under pressure, fluid defense that blends into offense etc etc. It needs to be forged in fairly hard sparring. If you need to get more comfortable with a southpaw, spar southpaws. If you need to get more comfortable with a pressure fighter, a speedster, a guy with more traditional kicking techniques and footwork etc etc. But it should be responsible sparring, timed rounds, in a cage/ring, coaches supervising etc. Just like boxers do. Super imperative.

Max Holloway even talks about how it was crucial when he was young, also keep in mind Max had his first MMA and kickboxing bouts at 15, but by the time he was pushing 30 he didnt spar much anymore because he felt like the cons began to outweigh the pros in terms of self preservation vs self optimization.

Anyways, sparring is crucial, it does semi regularly need to be HARD sparring. But very intentional, structured and overseen/responsible. MMA fighters bodies fall apart more due to the wrestling and weight cuts than anything else. MMA fans dont seem to understand the importance of sparring.

Hey at least they were using boxing gloves and not the 4 oz gloves. That was just a regular Friday night when I was training. Both allowed the other to get up when a slip occurred, they were using combinations well enough. Sparring hard is good, always good to get the feel of a real fight when preparing for one, and even then, you aren't trying to put your partners lights out or fuck them up too bad.
