OK guys, a little help here. I'm currently shopping for a new piece of headgear that's close to the winning fg 2900. I've seen people rave about the TU superlative headgear and the GFG silverback headgear is being hyped to be as good as the FG-2900.. Any other options that I can consider?? the lower the price without compromising the quality, the better

thanks in advance

i always find that if you settle, later on your regret it. what do u have saved towards headgear? if you wait maybe a week or 2 even a month you could save what you need for winning. winning has a great reputation and if its what u really want you might regret not waiting. plus its headgear so i think its worth the investment. i have reyes headgear...standard style and the nylon face bar style and i really like it. i think reyes's consistency and use of top notch materials has me completely sold on their brand. i think like winning they are the only company that does not have a low end line of gear. they only make high end like winning..just my .02..good luck

I really like my Top Ten Avantgarde headgear. The Winning 2900 doesn't have any coverage on the back of the head except for some lace, so in that respect I think it only really makes sense for boxing. I too frequently work with sparring partners who lack control and occasionally swat the back of my head. In cases like that, I'm glad I have full coverage.

The Top Tens look a little different, but most of the folks at my gym have said they look 'cool.' I'll be honest, I think they look a little silly, but that's way down the list of things I want out of headgear. It's not like I'm wearing it on dates.

our silverback headgear was not made to be a winning clone it was made completely different to the fg-2900. I did however rip apart a winning to see what the fuss was about and got a few ideas from it to produce our silverback headgear but in the end it is a different headgear which i believe will offer superior protection for muay thai and mma.

however the only reason i even put my headgear in the same sentence as the winning FG-2900 is because the FG-2900 is known to offer the best protection and i feel that our Silverback is a better bang for your buck.

I train muay thai and at my gym the most of the fighters including myself, and the trainers, use the FG 2900. There are other guys who use the everlast, title, etc.(the ones with padding on the back) but they keep having to re-adjust because their head gear shifts. I think having laces on the back helps keep your headgear snug and prevents shifting.

I dont know why people keep saying the Winning FG-2900 only make sense for boxing. Since in muay thai/mma/boxing etc don't allow hitting the back of the head. If your sparring partners dont have control and keep hitting you in the back of the head you give them one warning to stop and calm down, and then you kick them in the face.

The Top Ten Avantgarde looks kinda like a harder version of the TKD foam headgear IMO.

I got a triumph united superlative and I'm very pleased with it.

That being said, the new GFG headgear is looking hella slick. If you have the cash, I'd go for it.

high end boxing headgear is normally made from softer foam as you never have to worry about getting hit with anything other then a padding glove. This softer foam absorbs energy very well however if a hard object comes crashing into it, it can't disperse the energy over a wider area and can fully compress and once it fully compresses the foam has no benefit at all.

Good Muay thai headgear tends to have denser foam to disperse the energy of getting hit from hard objects like and elbow, knee or shin, but it doesn't absorb energy to well.

Finding a good balance between the 2 is only the tip of the iceberg.

Thanks for the recos... Do you own any of these??

No, unfortunately I do not. Fight Gear only makes headgear, and has a very solid reputation. And, I really like the design of the Rival RHG30 that I posted, because of the extra cheek and nose protection over their RHG Pro version. Rival has a pretty solid reputation, also. You would probably be hard pressed to go wrong with any of those three, but the FightGear Mexican Style Headgear has a design cut closest to the FG-2900.

I think several people on here have the Rival Tradition Headgear, and seem to like it. The only complaint that I have heard so far on their headgear, is the lack of nose protection on the RHG Pro version that I mentioned.

Just get the FG 2900, it's well worth the money. Save up some cash if you have to.

I'm really planning to, but my main concern is I also have other expenses and bills to pay... I'm also trying to see how EMS packages work here in Manila since taxes tend to be a pain in the ass when ordering online

If taxes and customs are a problem when ordering online, on your next trip to Japan, buy the Winning FG-2900 while you are there, cut off the price tags, and rather than trying to hide it in your luggage, just wear it home through customs. When the inspector asks, "what's that on your head?", just say "it's a hat." :icon_lol:

I agree, get the Winnings. Best headgear I've ever touched, let alone use.

I agree it shouldn't happen, and good sparring partners won't do it, but it DOES happen. And even if it only happens 2-3 times every 6 months (Which is what I've experienced) it still fucking hurts. And let's be honest, if someone throws a high kick at you and you mistakenly decided to roll or you're already stepping for an angle, and you end up eating it, there's a danger that part of that kick is going to land on the back of your head.

The other place that it helps is if you're working takedowns and grappling in conjunction with stand up. There's a pretty good chance if you actually get picked up and dropped that your head will bounce off the floor. Now granted mats and rings aren't as hard as concrete, but they still hurt.

So that's my thinking for why you want the padding on the back of a headgear. If you're doing straight stand up, I would say the FG2900 makes perfect sense. If you're going to be doing anything else though, a little padding on the back is a damn good idea.
