Russian newspaper Sport-Express posted a new interview with Aleksandr Emelianenko ahead of Fedor's fight with Frank Mir and ahead his own fight with Gabriel Gonzaga.
This is related to the Fedor interview that I also posted today.
I will write to my brother before his fight
During the last fall Aleks and Fedor had a public conflict (Link with info in English). Soon both of them have fights against serious opponents. On 5th of May Aleks is fighting former UFC fighter Gabriel Gonzaga in Yekaterinburg. A week earlier on 28th of April, his brother Fedor will face the American UFC ex-champion Frank Mir. Aleks told Sport-Express that he usually doesn't watch fights but will make an exception for his brother's fight.
– What do you think about your upcoming opponent - Gonzaga?
– Very famous fighter. It doesn't happen, that an athlete that made a come back get, one of the best straight away. Of course everybody want big fights, but promoters usually build up tho these kinds of fights, they gradually find more and more interesting and skilled opponents.
I will get ahead of my self a little, my manager Alexey Titov said that they have preliminary agreements for fights against Mirko Crocop and Roy Nelson. We just have to agree on some details.
– Mirko Crocop fight must be special for you, considering that you lost to him in 2004.
– Every opponent is special for me. I go out to win the fight, show my physical strength and moral resilience.
– Did you follow Gonzaga before he became your opponent?
– No I didn't follow him. I don't follow anyone at all. I don't like watching fights. I don't enjoy it.
– You don't watch fights at all?
– Just the big title fights, just to stay n touch with what's going on. Majority of young fighter watch the fights on TV, at the same time on their phones, also they discuss fights among themselves. That's incorrect, it's an excessive load on someone! Sometimes you need rest from fighting, you need to unload from fighting psychologically. Or it becomes that an athlete is constantly in training. He's training, training, training, fights, fights, fights. If I speak about me, wherever I show up, to friends, acquaintances... everyone starts talking about fighting. Therefor I try to switch to something else. I read for instance.
– What are you reading at the moment?
– I always read the holy scripture. At the moment I'm reading Lucius Seneca, it's an ancient Roman philosopher. In the summer I plan to go to university. I already have one higher education, it's economy and business administration.
– What are you planning to study now?
– Oil extraction and law. I want to get two degrees. I'm planning on taking distance courses. I don't like living my life in mediocrity and waste my time.
There's some new THING going around... I decided to spend time with friends. We gathered 5-6 people. Only a couple of people are communicating with each other, the others sit and stare in their smartphones. One is stuck staring, then the second and then the third. In 30 minutes time, the company that was supposed to dedicate time to each other sits around with their phones wasting their time.
Yes I also have profiles on social media, in Instagram, Vkontakte (Russian Facebook). But it's part of my job, I'm a public person, I have to tell people about my training and show the parts of my life that interests them. But I don't stare in the smartphone all day.
– If you watch title fights then you probably saw Khabib Nurmagomedov's fight.
– Yes. I called Khabib after the fight and congratulated him. I am very happy for him! The journey that he has traveled, really is only the beginning for him. Now he has to retain the championship belt and prove that he is the best, cement his place at the top, and write down his name in MMA history with big letters.
– Will you watch your brother's fight?
– Of course
– Will you text him before the fight?
– Yes, I'll wish him luck. After the fight I will try to contact him. He has probably turned his phone of right now, so no one will bother him. I also do that before fights. Even further, if anyone asks me what hotel I stay at, I don't say. Otherwise the next day the whole lobby will be filled with acquaintances. Everyone will look at me with that look on their face like: "Will you give me some attention? But I don't have time for that, I'm preparing for a fight. I am sure that Fedor's phone is turned off right now. But I will text him and wish him luck.
– Is Fedor the favorite in fight against Mir?
– He is always the favorite, in every fight. Another matter is that I don't know what shape Fedor is in at the moment. I haven't trained with him for a long time so I don't know what his physical and technical capabilities are. It's better to ask Fedor's sparring partners, his coaches or him personally.
You know how it is...(Sherdoggers take notice! ) there are people who are acting smart and try to portray themselves as experts of some kind. And where do these super experts come from? I start to check and it turns out that its some fat ass that ditched the PE classes in school. How can you trust the opinion of someone who is far away from sports in general and even further away from MMA in particular? But these "smart asses" exist and with great confidence they tell each other who's gonna beat who. That's kindergarten in my opinion.
