Which movie do you like better?

Tough call but Ghost in the Shell. Akira's great though. I'm on the verge of getting an Akira tattoo in fact (dat pill)
They both sucked, but Akira's art looked cooler and futuristic.
I feel llike both are so influential that its hard to judge them
I think Akira holds up better - I can still introduce people to anime through that movie and many of them will dig it. The animation is gorgeous
But if its better in this way, it's by the slightest of margins because even now I think some of the ideas of Ghost in the Shell might actually hold up better than Akira even if its not as accessible of a work.
Hard to say, I'll lean Akira though. I think both have been ripped from so much by both western and japanese media that neither quite feels as fresh if you watch it today. But Akira's action and energy and overall vibe make it the kind of movie you can put on in any mood and be entertained
100%Ghost has I think ended up being reused much more, most obviously for the Matrix but it was arguably the prime influence on sci fi cinema in the years either side of the millennium.
Akira in some ways though I think remains rather unique, I think you could argue the film itself took quite a strong influence from the likes of Blade Runner and 80's LA crime thrillers but theres a certain strangeness to it (especially the Geinoh Yamashirogumi soundtrack) that I don't think we've seen recreated very often since. Maybe Princess Mononoke or the Magnetic Rose section of Memories touched on it a bit but it was more than just mutations and gore.
Its why I think a Hollywood remake would be on dodgy ground, Ghost I felt was actually pretty good, a little dumbed down but did capture something of the original. Akira on the other hand is really a lot more than the designs/story, its the atmosphere the films creates.
Remakes dont count
