Akira vs Ghost in the Shell

Tough call but Ghost in the Shell. Akira's great though. I'm on the verge of getting an Akira tattoo in fact (dat pill)

They both sucked, but Akira's art looked cooler and futuristic.

Make sure that tattoo is no lower than your neck.

Also,

Akira was too trippy/mind fucky for me as a lad (haven't seen it as an adult).

I think Akira holds together better as a film personally, Ghost is more a series of great scenes like chasing the terrorist though the market, the montage on the barges and the fight with the tank.

I feel llike both are so influential that its hard to judge them
I think Akira holds up better - I can still introduce people to anime through that movie and many of them will dig it. The animation is gorgeous
But if its better in this way, it's by the slightest of margins because even now I think some of the ideas of Ghost in the Shell might actually hold up better than Akira even if its not as accessible of a work.

Hard to say, I'll lean Akira though. I think both have been ripped from so much by both western and japanese media that neither quite feels as fresh if you watch it today. But Akira's action and energy and overall vibe make it the kind of movie you can put on in any mood and be entertained

Prefer ghost, seen it more times though.

Both great but leaning towards ghost.

Been a decade at lest since I’ve watched either.

For me, cowboy bebop movie was better(or at least i remeber it that way)

Need to rewatch and see if my tastes and or appreciation for things has changed over the years.

Ghost has I think ended up being reused much more, most obviously for the Matrix but it was arguably the prime influence on sci fi cinema in the years either side of the millennium.

Akira in some ways though I think remains rather unique, I think you could argue the film itself took quite a strong influence from the likes of Blade Runner and 80's LA crime thrillers but theres a certain strangeness to it(espeiclaly the Geinoh Yamashirogumi soundtrack) that I don't think we've seen recreated very often since. Maybe Princess Mononoke or the Magnetic Rose section of Memories touched on it a bit but it was more than just mutations and gore.

Its why I think a Hollywood remake would be on dodgy ground, Ghost I felt was actually pretty good, a little dumbed down but did capture something of the original. Akira on the other hand is really a lot more than the designs/story, its the atmosphere the films creates.

Probably going to get some hate for this, bit GITS is kind of boring imo. Akira for sure.
