hi i was wondering if it would be any good to put plates of 5kg ( or whatever plates fit in it basically) into my heavy bag, as i there is a zip at the top of the heavy bag and it is just stuff with loads of material its only 30 kg to start with and i was going to take out some material to make space for some plates to add more weight to it. Is this a good idea because when i get home from the gym im still in the mindset of training and i play rugby and have started submission grappling so filling a heavy bag with weights making it weigh about 70-90kg (at the moment depending on how much plates i put in it) i think would be quite good as i could practise picking up and slamming back down picking it up putting it on my shoulder or lifting it and putting it over my arms and doing some running except thats cardio.

So whats your opinions?

cheers in advance

you might hurt yourself with the weight plates...similarly, it may tear through the shell

No plates man, just sand, get a bigger bag that fits more sand man.....

after time, the sand should settle and get compacted, then you can add more sand.

ok cheers. thanks my uncle is a builder and has loads of sand so ill just go up dere and take some.

the thing about the plates though i was going to rap them witht he material that the heavy bag was filled with so it wouldnt hurt when i tried anything.

Yeah, just open itup and toss in as much sand as you can fit (on top of the stuffing) then close it back up, and repeat as more room becomes available due to compaction and settling.

Depending on how secure the bag is, I'd suggest putting the same into large strong bags (coal sacks for example). That way you don't have such a problem with leakage.

Also- Use the type of sand they used for kids play pits. Its much finer and you can load it up much more.
Final thing is- Dry the sand out. I have heard bad things about punching wet sand. Not instantly, but over time it damages the joints

cool that theres a thread here already about this.

Im going to be getting a bag in the coming weeks, but have noticed that i can get a bag without it machine filled and fill it myself. would this be better and fill it with sand so its heavier or?

Its a secure bag and i can get it alot cheaper without it being machine filled and already have alot of dry beach/play sand spare so?

If its machine filled it'll be a lot more even quicker.

With the sand method it takes time because you have to allow the sand to settle. But when it does it will be a much more difficult prospect hitting then the machine filled bag

the thing is about punching it i have to heavy bags and i just want to make one heavyier so i cud do cardio stuff like picking it up and running with it for as far as i can i don't want to punch it thats why i wanted to put plates in it, but people told me sand but if im nt punching should just put plates in it.

You still dont want to put plates in it... If you lift it over your head for instance and lose controll over it and get it in your head, -clam-bang- concusion.... Thats just one of several reasons you dont want to do that....
