this thread brings me to MMA where ive slowly discovered most of the UFC fans, and this will be controversial here, do not fight at all. a short exposition of my fighting history is that im a Kyokushin practitioner with a strong Muay thai base that eventually came and very minimal grappling (basic TDD). facing grapplers in the MMA arena would fill me with dread for there is nothing worse than being in the bottom of a wrestler/BJJ artist who has your number for the minutes that eclipse within such moments go on forever. having never been KO'd means little but having tapped out many times is a bit humiliating for you eventually choose to avoid those with a strong grappling base.
ive trained with grapplers. ive been smothered in side control by a 185 lber who made me rethink my life choices. ive escaped bad positions and felt that rush when you finally reverse. thats chess with consequences. you don’t get to call it “boring” if you’ve never:

-had your posture broken in guard
-fought off a rear-naked for 2 minutes while the crowd boos
-hit a sweep and heard your coach scream like you just won the belt

but with combat experience comes the appreciation of the arts itself. exceptions will exist but i will stick my neck out to say the ones who actually are practioners, do not seek pure entertainment in watching UFC for the call of:

“lay-n-pray trash”
“stand it up ref!”
“UFC died after anderson silva”

are almost always ones who have never step foot in a dojo to octagon in their entire lives. it is the sole reason i gave the exposition above because fan culture is quite toxic and to a greater extent, laughable.

have you EVER competed or sparred in MMA/BJJ/wrestling (even amateur)?
A) yes – multiple times
B) yes – sparred/rolled but never competed
C) no – but I train striking only
D) no – i just watch

if you argue against this please use reasoning and logic not your irrelevant MMA background because mine is just as irrelevant. im a striker first and foremost who taps often and see the art in even the grappling exchanges i cannot perform myself. we are speaking about a forum who had an entire meltdown over an absolute killer not choosing to risk his fighting legacy over the fact that one eye was not optimally functioning (which is everything in elite combat hierarchies let alone the best striker in HW). how in the world do you question the heart of a man who is doing what you never are willing to do? how do most who practice the same art as Cyril Gane not prone to understanding that eye pokes with an open handed stance will happen and often do?

call it pretentious but im being nice here. what im actually saying is this is my summoning of the ones who fight here, will see the appreciation in every fight because combat practitioners and a large sample size of them do not seek entertainment in other men fighting they see it for what it actually is. i cannot convince most thrill seekers otherwise and im already anticipating how much hate this will get.

last night wasn't thrilling but it was complete and utter domination in the finer intricacies of MMA and this is coming from someone who predicted JDM would win and while I admit the Khamzat-DDP fight was devoid of any entertainment its constant flux of grappling exchange was a craft in itself and once again, the ones who have BEEN in such situations, wont bitch and moan like most did here for a month. you dont hate dagestanis you just hate the change of the MMA status quo and that they've done what they've done and embarrassed your favourite fighters. i merely accepted it a year or two ago.

i say if you're angry over a fight being boring find greater thrill in your life or actually do so within a combat centre itself believe me it is more of a thrill than watching any of your favourite fighters/highlights will ever be once you have the courage to stop spectating men who are doing what you never had the courage to do, and actually try your hand in it. please be honest with yourselves and after you're done finding every reason to hate on what is said here, wonder why you suspect your gf cheats on you (she is) and go out there and do not waste your prime, and stfu. <31>

like this if you are a true combat practitioner and being here for a year i spotted immediately the ones who do. you can lie on the forum but believe me lying to yourself is thrice as damaging. no there is nothing special about being that guy who also watches the early pre-lims.

thank you, sherdog.

Same with the irrational Khamzat hate.

If you find it boring to watch the total domination of champions who get 25 minutes and can't do shit because of the absolute superiority of their opponent...

may I suggest:
KOTS for that delicious ultra-violence...
kots-savage-head-bounce.gif

or even BKFC if you like real savages who'll give their last drop (eye or not)...

I enjoyed the card.

Then I came back on Sherdog and everyone was talking Hella shit.

So...

What was the question?

Casuals aren't gonna be happy about a fight with 75% control time.

I understand that is a life and death battle. I saw JDM fighting for his life (and just SEVERELY overmatched... but he wasn't looking to take any easy way out)

It is what it is bro.

People want blood.

I enjoyed the violence of the middle of the card and the chess for the brief time before they devolved into foregone conclusions of the title fights but I am not exactly mad at someone that didn't love 50 minutes of fighting with no points where a finish was even on the menu.

As someone who's been on both the giving and receiving ends of fighting and for as much as I like fighting, I still have a real hard time getting invested in WMMA. Maybe it's just me, but I suspect there are others who feel the same, so two relatively meaningless bouts and a one-sided title snoozer took up 45 minutes of this card. Coupling that with two main-events that only proved massive skill gaps would definitely have been seen as a let down by casual fans.

You can't help that any more than you can fix stupid.

UFC 322 was a banging card. Nickal, BSD, Prates all delivered highlight reel finishes. It answered a lot of questions I personally had about Islam, and JDM showed some excellent defense and escapes, but he was injured and completely outclassed. Ewing was fucking robbed. That kid deserved fight of the night and he literally put up the performance of his lifetime. He deserved a bonus, because I think that was one of those 1 in 10 times he pulled it off.

Listening to Joe gargle Sabatini's balls was nauseous, and I'll be honest, it really didn't feel like an MSG card. Could have been any venue in the US and it wouldn't have seemed any different. Where was the turnip last night? He didn't want to cozy up to NYC's new mayor, being as they would be in the same city and all?

Watching DC and Joe get distracted by Dickhead getting beat up was funny, and Danis getting banned...

<{anton}>

that's a lovely novel you've written.

Agreed. That card was great. It had some amazing knockouts.

no, the fight wasn't memorable, despite its finessed chess battle on the floor. some stand up exchanges too were interesting with a defensive countering Makachev v a world class striker in JDM.

my problem is the ones who keep bitching about the same thing. its pretentious to call someone who doesn't enjoy it as a casual but the bigger premise is most who do have extensive combat experience will see the merit in all facets of a fight unless its genuinely just a BAD fight.

For sure not planning on rewatching the main or co-main.

Morales, Prato and BSD delivered.
Enjoyed the prelims

The title fights answered questions

Is Weili good enough and big enough to hang with Val? Nope.

Is Islam still gonna be dominant at WW? Yup.

But once each of those fights fell into their patterns, the excitement fell off hard. It is what it is.

I would have liked to see Jack at least TRY to fight coming forward and see if he could hurt Islam, but we didn't get that- oh well

Lol a karate guy is going to lecture MMA fandom while acknowledging that he himself never competed in MMA, or grappling from what I can tell. May have missed that detail while skimming the tragically verbose wall of text.

Fuck anyone, pro fighter or otherwise, who thinks they have some kind of monopoly on what we should consider entertaining or impressive.

I actually competed in BJJ. Posted videos here to that effect. I check all the boxes you outlined except for MMA competition, and I have zero interest in watching someone maintain chest contact with zero effort to finish a fight.

The card was amazing, stop thinking your changing things by downplaying a card when "your guy" loses. If all your doing is venting, that's fine I get it..

If anyone that has been commenting on these fights since the old days of Pride or Strikeforce or Affliction they are likely in the 40-50 year old bracket. All this bullshit crying about long time fans not liking a style of fight that has been heavily decried the entire history of the sport you sound like the newb not the people with opinions. As far as what I have done in training it’s kind of none of your fucking business but some of us in addition to training or fighting and being fans of the sport we love watching had professional careers more lucrative than getting punched in the face praying to make it to real money and many of us far more dangerous. Instead of worrying about who trained and didn’t and using that as an assessment OF ANYTHING why don’t you analyze the fact MANY FIGHTERS have disagreeable opinions that don’t coincide with your crying.
