90's R&B Singer D'Angelo Dead At 51

I didn't like that era of music for the most part, still surprising seeing folks pass that seemed so young just yesterday.

I didnt follow his whole career but that first album he dropped back in 1995 was a smooth R&B classic, it had some amazing baby making songs on it

Never heard of the guy, but RIP.

And fuck cancer. :(

I remember he was the Brown Sugar dude and then like 5 years later his next album came out, it appeared he'd done nothing but situps between
ya, he wasn't prolific, I held it against him when he made statements about Prince's 90's output, bothered me because I think he had 2 albums at most out by that time, maybe not even that. Him talking about a guy who always stayed moving when he hadn't proven jack shit rubbed me wrong. He was talented, no lie.

I love D'Angelos first album. I bought his cd in high school when it came out because I heard brown sugar on the radio. And out of 10 songs, 8 were bangers and I would listen to them, and still do, on repeat. Still to this day and all through the years. Then he came out with his 2nd cd and had a few really good ones but nothing compared to that first one. I'd say if I had to pick an album thats my favorite ever the first would be in the running.
Me and those dreaming eyes of mine is probably my favorite.

Damn, that sucks. Pancreatic cancer is a bitch.

I liked his music. I really enjoyed this performance on SNL about 10 years ago.

It works fast I knew someone who died a month after being diagnosed because you usually have it for a long time before symptoms show up.

I remember the jaime foxx parody of d'angelo.

There was quite a buzz in my circle, which consisted of musicians, so it's a bit different than being a normal person. They were raving about him, I don't think I ever really heard more than a few of his songs. I never liked the music of that era. "Neo-Soul" what was wrong with the old soul? It didn't need to be overpolished, overproduced and totally image oriented. That's not just him, that was just one branch of an industry that didn't offer much.

Again, the fact that he talked shit about Prince, a guy who was supposed to be his hero, at a time when he was just really getting his feet wet did piss the Prince fans off and I for one, stated that the game wasn't that easy for anyone. Then, D'angelo has some sort of breakdowns or personal problems, Prince did more albums in his first five years than D'angelo did in his entire career.

Damn Rip. Looked up Angie Stone because of the thread and she died this year as well?!
ya, some sort of car accident i think. Again, that era's stars, regardless of genre didn't interest me. Kids don't even care about music today and I see why, it's been gradually going down the shitter for a long time.

You gonna talk shit on Prince...you better have some credibility to back it up.

especially in the shoes he was in, it's not some critic, it's someone who people were gonna look at to measure him and he hadn't done much at that point.

Right,. I can say (if I was an idiot) "Prince sucks" : People I interact with with will mostly say I'm a moron and that's it.

Being an up and coming musician and talking shit about a legend...well you're probably going to be called an idiot, then when you likely don't come close to the man's greatness you are proven to be so.
