0:15 What took so long to officially book Chimaev fight?
He's not sure, but Ali (lol, believing Ali) said it was gonna be on a Brazil card which was canceled, then Kham had some sort of visa issues expiring in March. Gilbert doesn't mind too much, as he was getting ready the whole time anyway, but it was stretched out.
2:00 Why is the fight not five rounds?
Again, doesn't know. Thinks UFC's decision because there were already a bunch of title fights. Ali and Burns wanted 5, don't think Chim asked for 3 either.
2:33 Why give Chimaev the opportunity?
If not Khamzat, then who? Lots of others said no. Colby, Mas, and Leon were booked, won't fight Luque who is booked against Belal. Not a lot of options. Khamzat is new with a lot of hype. Burns asked for a few other people like Magny, but UFC said no. UFC suggested Kham. Dana said it's a #1 contender fight, and that's what Gilbert wants.
4:40 Is the hype justified?
He's very tough, believe he is good. Very impressive performances. Comments that Khamzat is finishing the way you should when booked in 'easy fights.' Doesn't think he's a "monster" based on his competition, but Khamzat is making a point. Now he's fighting Gil, which is a big step up. Good striking, good BJJ, high level wrestler, very big and cuts lot of weight.
6:35 Chael Sonnen said Chimaev walks around at 181, true or false?
Immediately tries to cut him off saying that's not true. Chael a liar (as always). Gil woke up 192 and cutting weight already. Gil says he walks around 196-200, go down to 188-192 in camp. Laughingly hopes Khamzat is lighter, but doesn't believe it.
8:20 Chimaev's trash talk?
Likes the self-belief and confidence and calling people out, doesn't believe it's arrogance. Maybe a little overconfidence because he never saw a loss, thinks he's a bit untouchable, Gilbert remembers being there.
9:53 Does every fighter feel unbeatable with an undefeated record?
Yes. When someone sees a loss early in their career, they have a little bit more familiarity with loss which changes you. But someone like Khabib, they're just different. Let's see.
10:43 Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Islam Makhachev?
The one thing Khabib had was his dad controlling his emotion and confidence and that's why he was so special. Helped him on a different level. But Islam was there too, benefited too. Thinks Islam is mature too and can become champ. Excited to see Islam-Dariush, hopes it gets made again. Ultimately wants to see Islam vs Charles, moreso than Islam-Dariush or Charles-Justin. Top 4 fights he wants to see are that as #1, followed by Gilbert vs Khamzat, Colby, and Usman.
13:15 Training camp, training partners?
2 Russian secret weapons. Can't say. Helping a lot. Henri Hooft, Jason Jackson, Sean Soriano, Ian Garry, Demarques Jackson (No, that's not Johnson), Vagner Rocha for BJJ. Anticipates lots of bad positions, training a lot of get ups. Some others training with Russian wrestling (didn't catch the names, I'm not going back anymore, sorry)
15:05 Anything new to training/recovery in 2022?
Just changed physical therapist. Same Psychologist, S&C, boxing, kickboxing. Didn't change much other than that and 2 new sparring partners hired. Wants to "feel" his opponent before they fight, so partners having the same body is important too. Shape and size. For training, he gets into position, asks coach, then writes notes. If sparring's not working or doing well, then switches to reps and goes back.
18:43 How do you envision the Chimaev fight?
Sees a war, doesn't see an easy fight. Kham will come in big and strong and looking to impose. If he gets a takedown, Gilbert will have to get up, sweep, or work submissions. Have to put pressure with range boxing, kicking.. Sees 3 hard rounds. Never takes an opponent easily, especially Khamzat. Thinks finish will happen either way, doesn't believe going for decision, but a high pace grind all round until then.
20:15 Being the betting underdog once again?
Again cuts the guy off midsentence, saying he loves it. Friends are so happy because they'll make money. Doesn't bother him, makes no difference. Only started betting online himself recently with his wife. Follows some girls fighting, doesn't know them all, but his wife does, so she explains it and they gamble a bit.
21:25 What is the level of pressure of fighting for the title/number contender?
There's always pressure. There's a lot of pressure on him every single fight, hopes there's a lot on Khamzat too. Talks about the pressure going against Wonderboy, who nobody wanted, then Belal did it and texted him thanks for the blueprint. Dana saying it's a number 1 contender fight makes Gilbert want to come in for the kill. Thinks Usman comes in better than anyone. Comes in short notice against Mas, asks for another. Beats Colby again. Usman is the best with pressure, and a champion must deal with pressure the most. Gilbert's still learning, and thinks the most pressure on this fight is on him. He talks about pressure being all on the fighters in the cage, then talked about soccer for like 3 minutes, idk, I don't give a shit, I'm not writing that. I'm skipping to the next time stamp.
26:50 Is Jorge Masvidal not a PPV star anymore after losing to Colby Covington?
Maybe? Don't know. They can be such big stars, Mas & Conor, so they may still be big after losses. Floyd (who gil says is on a different level from them) still gets millions just fighting Logan Paul. He doesn't want to see that, but people do, so. Gil thinks anything is possible, Conor can come back, but needs to sacrifice and do a Rocky montage, quit whiskey, train off in the mountains somewhere. But if he's partying? Never come back. Same for Mas. Doesn't know Mas as a person, likes as a fighter, but thinks the fame/money is an issue you have to separate yourself from.
29:30 Jorge Masvidal/Conor McGregor?
That would be a crazy fight. Both are dangerous. Phew. If they're still partying, going crazy, Gil's not interested. Glover said he has to do much more recovery/training at his age, had to stop drinking, change his lifestyle and then became champ at over 40, so they can change too.
Ends laughingly saying him vs Kham is the real main event, the people's main event.
