Unfortunately Oliveira's striking style will play into Gaetje's / Whittman's favour..

I really want Oliveira to win this one.. my favourite champ atm..

But Trevor Whitman is very good at coming up with ways to defeat Do Bronx's type of style, which is forward moving / high volume Muay Thai without much head movement / elusive footwork..

JG also hits like a truck, and I'm sure Whitman will have figured out lots of Oliveira's tendencies and multiple ways to find and complete a finish..

Or Justin fights like an idiot. Roll the dice.

Charles Oliveira has very good head movement and has become very durable OP.

How else do you believe he was able to stand in the pocket and take power shots from Dustin Poirier?

Oliveira's game-plan was to let Poirier touch him up so he could beat up Dustin's body with knees and take away that durability that has allowed him to KO Anthony Pettis, Eddie Alvarez, and.Justin Gaethje among others in the later rounds?

If anyone does not move their head and is hit too much its Justin Gaethje. UFC fans erroneously believe the old Charles Oliveira who would resign himself to being finished is still there; he's not. This is a fighter you are going to need to knock unconscious, not TKO, to finish.

agree with OP, although I think Charles has good gameplanning and fight IQ too so we'll see what we get. maybe some good front kicking from Charles.

It's 50/50 on the stand up. Olivera pressures forward and Gaethje doesn't respond as well to when fighters pressure him. That's how Chandler was able to find success in his fight with Gaethje. The clinch work will favor Olivera with the knees and elbows. Olivera needs to not throw those leg kicks from inside range when exchanging hooks. That will get him dropped or flash KO. A lot of muay thai fighters and kickboxers like to kick from that range, it gets them knocked out in certain fights especially if they throw naked kicks or lead with the leg kick.

I love Oliveira's fighting style, but he played Russian Roulette with Porier in the striking, he prevailed but he was taking big risks.. I guess that's the style he's gone with, but it could be very dangerous as Gaetje's hands are better than ever, the performances against Ferguson and Chandler were on a different level imo..

that what everyone said before he was gone fight tony than before the chandler fight than before the dustin fight.

Oli has gotten hurt in all of his recent fights. I think Justin is a bad match up for him on paper with the power and leg kicks. Still, I wouldn't be shocked at all if Justin gets his back taken and choked out either.

Seems to be the opposite to me.

Off the top of my head pretty much all of Whittman's fighters have trouble/closer fights with more technical, fundamental, down the barrel strikers, and do well against wild brawlers.
  • Usman KOs Burns and Mas but has two close fights with Colby
  • Rose KOs a wild Weilli and then has a close (maybe even controversial?) rematch with a more calculated Weilli
  • Gaethje beats Tony and Chandler easily, but struggled with Khabib who pretty much just jabbed him (while pursuing his TDs)
Which makes sense as Trevor's "gimmick" is for them NOT to be wildly swinging like most MMA fighters are. They look good because everybody else is just doing things so wrong, and then you put them against somebody equally just running the fundamentals and they start having closer fights/losing them.

It's a tad meaningless to me though as the question isn't how their striking matches up but how their chins do. Neither's is invincible, though Justin's is certainly more dependable than Charles.
