Gunnar Nelson's return is imminent, and he goes against fellow submission ace Claudio Silva.

39 year old Silva is on a two fight skid having been shut out by fellow veterans Court McGee and James Krause. Those losses shattered a 14 fight streak.

Nelson hasn't been seen since losses to Leon Edwards and Gilbert Burns in 2019, but emerges from his native Iceland where he has established his own MMA gym.

Who wins?

I did not see this coming. Claudio is too old and tired to be winning fights that go past rd 1. Gunnar via late tko.

Nice tuneup for Gunni, I was calling for Dalby but this works too. If he can't beat Silva at this point he may need to consider different career options.

Gunni's still doing this WW thing? I hope he's at least packed on some size.

Bad stylistic matchup for Silva. Claudio has elite mat skills but no way to get the fight to the ground; just an utter lack of offensive wrestling game. He has fairly decent power in his hands and showed some heavy leg kicks against Krause, but that's probably because he loads up and throws both like a spaz. Nothing but kill shots. His technique on the feet is... not the best. Not to mention the deficiencies he's shown with his gas tank.

Gunni always has his sport karate roots to fall on. He isn't quite Wonderboy or anything, but I suspect can strike well enough from the outside to land on Claudio while avoiding his power IMO. Nelson has also traditionally looked quite strong in the clinch despite being smaller than many of his opponents so I'm not worried about him getting muscled to the ground. He's also a decentish MMA wrestler compared to Silva. Even if the fight goes to the mat, Nelson is a very credentialed submission grappler himself. While I could see a world where Claudio exploits his own size and technique to control Gunnar on the mat (probably not finishing him, but who knows?) like Maia did, I suspect Nelson would be able to stay defensively responsible and survive those situations -- maybe even turn the tables given Claudio's advanced age and layoff of his own.

I'm hoping for Gunnar. He's been out for awhile though, so who know's where he's as. At least I don't think he'll be giving up as much size/strength for this fight. Edwards and Burns were so much bigger and stronger than him.

Would it be crazy for Gunnar to try for the submission given Claudio could tire? That would still be a feather in his cap imho.

war gunni, hope he’s been improving on this layoff.

if he gets better cardio and improves his takedowns he can still be a solid threat in the division.

Didn't he willingly grapple with Maia in certain spots? It wouldn't surprise me. Except I could legitimately see him getting one against a gassed, third round Silva who's been beaten up on the feet a bit and failed to impose his will. Sort of a Viera/Hernandez situation except with Gunnar being a far better submission ace than Fluffy in his own right. I mean at the end of the day he has youth, more pro MMA sub wins, belt rank, and BJJ competition pedigree on Claudio -- it's just that Silva is a much bigger man (ex-Middleweight) who went on a murderous undefeated submission streak at 170 and has been doing Jiu-Jitsu since he was a kid.
