I'm talking about when your opponent is on their back, you're standing over them and they've got their legs extended to keep you away from them.

Sure, you might be sacrificing position but they're basically giving you their legs.

I can only think of two instances where the standing fighter went for it and they were both HW fights:

  • Andrei Arlovski won an interim belt by submitting Tim Sylvia with an Achilles lock
  • Ciryl Gane submitted Don'Tale Mayes with a heel hook

Could just be a coincidence but maybe it happened at HW because they thought a big guy would be too slow to react to defend against it. Then again there are probably other instances that I'm just not aware of.

Palhares?

Just watched this video, #9 (against Tomasz Drwal) and #1 (against Rafael Lovato Jr in a submission grappling match) are probably the closest to what I'm talking about but I think Palhares was technically grounded already in both by the time he actually went for the leg

Would not recommend unless....I don't know, would not recommend unless you are behind on the cards big time and time running out.

Even Rahya, one of the best BJJ guys in the UFC, he lost position going for leglocks against Kang I think.

It's a big no no in my book, unless you are Paul Harris or Hall of course.

I don't think even Aoki out of all people does that, he'd try to get half guard or side control.
