Unlike skinny guys who lacked the strength to win in the clinch or defend some takedowns

Wanderlei was always jacked yet never developed good defensive abilities.

His style was tailored to the PRIDE scoring and match making, where aggression and going for the finish was prioritized.

he had a decent jj bottom game. By the time he returned to the ufc, he was too old to change his game drastically.

His aggression and IQ are both 10.

One is out of 10 and the other is out of 100(?)

Fuck if I know. I'm not IQ expert.

He did have good takedown defense. Later in his career his takedown defense didn't look as good though. Watch his first fight with henderson, yoshida, first 2 fights with rampage in his prime.

Pride rules didn’t reward lay n pray so it wasn’t as important

You must not have ever seen his first fight with Dan Hendo. or fight with Tito. Once he was force off them shits his tank dropped and TD would gas him more then he liked.

TDD is kind of an inmate ability. You can learn the techniques but not be good at it. Shields and Askren will always be horrible strikers. They are not disposed to it, regardless of the amount of training.

Probably laziness. He doesn't seem like a hard working person. Look at how fat he was in his bellator fights.
