I was really surprised by Calvin's less boxing centric approach.
He used his wrestling, top control, pressure and elbows way more in that fight.

While those parts of his game are good it's clearly not his A game (boxing and landing that long 1 into 2 combo)

I was wondering if you remember fight where fighters used their B game to defeat their opponents?

I remember Aldo ridding Cheeto's back for a whole round to win the third round or Corey Anderson just banging with Walker.

I mean Calvin got one takedown when his opponent slipped, I'm not sure where all this talk about wrestling is coming from, I feel like I watched a different fight than OP. Calvin fought with his A game from what I saw which is boxing, elbows and a lot of pressure.

He jumped on that TD in the first like his life depended on it and tried a few Td in the fight.
Also he really pressure hard in that fight. Usually he tends to accept being pushed back and just put his high guard and wait for his turn.
He also didn't fish that much for the long 1 to 2 combo that he loves. I think he clearly had to make a lot of changes to his usual approach.

Cruz wrestling up DJ instead of performing his usual goblin dance? Idk if I'm correct, my memories of that fight are almost non existent.
Yeah he was losing the striking and decided to just wrestle-fuck the little man.
Usually his takedowns are more opportunistic (on a level change/on a right hand) but he chained them more vs DJ

I thought he fought Giga in a very similar way to how he fought Zabit minus some takedown attempts and clinches and I'm not even sure if that was considered a takedown in round 1. Giga tripped and then Kattar sort of ran and tackled him after he was already on the ground to keep him there.

Jon Jones not training would qualify I guess. May have been his C game at times.

Stipe's bread and butter is the stand and bang but he'll revert to his wrestler background when a dangerous striker doesn't have the TDD to resist it. Ngannou 1.0 and Mark Hunt being the prime examples.

Khabib using Raging Al's face as a reflex bag for five rounds straight.

I guess you could maybe include Serra's upset over GSP as well? Primary grappler who decided to invest heavily into boxing for that camp with the intent of working his way inside the pocket and throwing heavy leather. Everyone thought if he pulled off the upset it would be by Hail Mary submission.

Condit v Diaz

Unexpected and effective

Also, Carlos missed some bombs and elbows that would have made it look like a usual Condit game plan if they had landed.

It’s kind of odd. If you are an actual well rounded mma fighter. There is no plan B. You are capable of doing striking and wrestling/grappling/subs with almost equal success. Most will always be more dominant at any one of those things. But if you can strike with strikers, and wrestle with wrestlers. Chances are you will be an elite mma fighter.

Yeah I would say a guy like Volk has no B game
