Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Rickson started it from taking it from Capoeira, then Ido Portal started doing it, then Conrat did it in the press for the MayMac
I accidentally started doing this warming up before doing pushups, and it isn't a bad way to stretch out and warmup. Boxers just think it's funny because it's unconventional.
I love making fun of Ido Portal stuff but seems like a good workout to be honest. Some sherdoggers have tried it out apparently and it makes you really fit but is pretty costly.
