This is not hyperbole by the way.
Colby Covington has not beat one relevant welterweight contender yet he has gotten TWO title shots.

why is that not a bigger mark on his legacy ? Even his fans defend that matchmaking and want him to fight Journeyman George or MOVE DOWN to LW (which is ridiculous in itself).

Part of your argument -- not fighting a top WW in their prime -- holds water, but for you to say he hasn't beaten a relevant welterweight contender is a step too far.

Woodley was #5 when he beat him.
Lawler was #10 when he beat him.
RDA was for the interim belt and was ranked higher than Covington at the time (RDA #2, Covington #3).
Maia was #3 when he beat him.
Kim was #7 when he beat him.

RDA was a 155, Lawler was old, Maia was old, Woodley was broken

If RDA had beaten Colby he'd have been a two division champ, and gotten to fight Woodley. Woodley only defended against Till and Colby was stripped instead because he needed nose surgery, which RDA wouldn't have. And in his very next fight he gave Usman his toughest fight other than Colby has.

But okay.

You have to give Colby some credit. He is the only guy to push Usman him since he has been champ. IMO being the number 2 guy is a worthy of positive recognition. Like him or not, Colby has likely achieved more in his profession than any of us Sherdoggers.

Because Usman is super dominant but Colby is competitive enough to win rounds off of him. He's competitive with the absolute best in the division.

candidate for topic KO of the year

Maia was a great win. RDA had a juicy ranking at the time, based on his LW pedigree, but the truth is that at WW, he is barely hovering above 50/50. I like the guy but it’s the truth.

So yeah: Colby has managed to talk his way into title shots and is now determined to avoid the fights he considers problematic.

He's 50/50 at WW because he lost to Colby, Usman, Leon, and Chiesa. Only the Chiesa loss is bad.

I also don't see how you can say Colby is trying to avoid fights when he's called out Usman, Masvidal, Edwards, Khamzat, etc. Who exactly is he avoiding?

Because Colby has no legacy.

He's a former interim champ so that's not true.

People also always just completely forget that he got completely fucked over by the UFC. He won the interim belt and the UFC wanted him to unify with Woodley 3 months later (why was there an interim belt then?), but he needed surgery. Instead of accommodating the time he needed they stripped him and gave Till a title shot so they could capitalize on Till before he lost. Then they gave Usman a title shot instead of him. Then they made him fight Lawler rather than fight Usman.

Truth is Colby should've fought Woodley, and apparently would've won and been undisputed champ based on how their fight went (or how Usman/Woodley went). He also might've beaten Usman if he'd gotten him in March 2020 vs December 2020 as Usman's striking only became great during that period (and still almost wasn't good enough to beat him in December anyways).

There's a very reasonable alternate universe where Colby was an undisputed champ, who may have notched a few title defences.

I mean technically he hasn’t beaten anyone in your logic but went toe to toe with the best in the world. I don’t like the guy but sometimes there’s more nuance to it than just rankings

I understand what you're saying and it's a very well thought out post. Not much of what you're saying is untrue. He would have beat Woodley. He may have notched a few title defenses (though hard to see with Usman in the division). The problem is, we don't live in an alternate universe. So while that all may true hypothetically, it isn't true in reality and that's where I struggle with Colby.

I feel the word legacy is thrown around far too easily. In my humble opinion, he's not the kind of guy who in 20 years most people will look back and regard as a game changer, must watch, must know fighter. I just don't.

I think he's good. I think he runs his mouth and gets attention. Do I think he will have a legacy in the sport? I just can't get around to that right now.

If I'm wrong, if he wins the title and goes on a tear, I'll be the first to admit it.

I'm that case Usmans not beat anyone except Colby who you're saying is a bum.

Masvidal is a lightweight journeyman with 15 losses, Burns is a lightweight and Woodley didnt put up a fight and never won a fight again.

Maia
Lawler
Masvidal ducked him hard

Did the best vs Usman twice. So far

I'd take Burns and Chimaev over him

But he hasn't
