People talk all the time about this fighter can't go five rounds and this fighter will win if it's a five round fight. All ranked fighters are looking to get themselves a main event or title shot. So why don't we just do all ranked fights a five rounder and then we'll see who can go five rounds and who are pretenders.

Then there is nothing special about championship/main event bouts, imo. Atleast besides it's for the belt, but the fight itself would not by any more difficult than your typical fight. Just how I see it anyway.

Good idea in a way but events would take a longgggg time and the UFC can't change their time structure in any major way due to being on tv with ESPN . Have to build cards to an exact time schedule for commercials and shit .

Because in shallow divisions fighters such as Jessica Eye are “ranked”.

Does anyone really wanna watch five rounds of someone like Jessica Eye?

I don’t think that’s realistic simply based on timing unless we’re cutting multiple fights.

A whole event currently takes like 6-8 hours. We’d be looking at more like 9-12. Idk about you but I’m usually exhausted after a full ppv card. Especially when we have multiple title fights

That I agree with. The easy solution would be to cut like 20 fighters from every division since there are a whole lot of crappy fighters in the UFC.

If that were to happen then the champions would need 6 or 7 rounds which is cool in theory but it's not like we need to in increase the onset of CTE.

There can be too much of a good thing. I'd rather all fights were 3 rounds. Rankings change every other fight so someone preparing for a regular fight would have to go another 10 mins because someone dropped out the rankings a few weeks before

But exhausted do you mean wasted ?

It’s not equitable for the ufc. Even if they cut the bottom fighters, they are asking more rounds of their highest paid guys. Less ring time covered by unranked fighters = more fighter cost for the ufc

I do wish some more fights were 5 rounds vs top fighters. Maybe the compromise solution to this proposal is any fight involving someone in the top 5 is a 5 round fight.
Anyone in the top 5 is around title contention. Fights like Gaethje/Chandler would then auto be 5 round fights, but you avoid fights between like #11 & #14 being made 5 rounders.

Sounds like a good way of having events take longer than the usual 7 odd hours, shortening high level fighters careers and having ranked fighters fight less frequently

Another reason Boxing > MMA. Boxers go 12 rounds. Imagine a 3 round boxing match! LMFAO
Just think, if Woodley vs Paul were only five rounds, we wouldn't have witnessed the most devastating knockout of Woodley's storied career. HAHAHA it was him getting knocked out, though!
Same with Conor getting TKO'd by Mayweather.

Another reason Boxing > MMA: Instead of watching a bunch of crappy fighters duke it out in 3 rounders, you get the cream of the crop for 12.

I like the idea in theory but the events are already incredibly long clocking in at 7+ hours usually. The only way it would work is to have just a couple per event leading to weaker events and top fighters fighting even less often.

Some fights are too long at 3 rounds nevermind 5. Save the 5 round fights for title fights and main events (as it is now).

so two 5 round wmma fights on every main card? no thank ya!

Have you watched a low-end professional fight? It is typically a talented fighter going against someone with no talent or a mediocre fighter at the tail end of their career. That is not cream of the crop ,12 rounders, they rarely last that long. Watch the opening part of Rocky. That is the majority of professional boxers. In MMA, most fights like that would be considered amateur fights.

You are probably trolling me, but I could not help myself.

I don't think that people talk all the time about "if this was a five rounder...".
I see that very much with some single fighters.

Maybe could do the co-main as a 5 rounder as well since it would be a fight between high ranked opponents.

But a whole main event of five rounders would be exausting.
