Charles really demonstrated exactly what some of us have been saying all along- Khabib did not prove all that much before he retired- guys like Poirier/Gathje/Conor would have gotten tooled by any great grappler.

Dustin really looked pathetic in there holding on for dear life every time he got in a grappling situation with Charles. You won't beat any elite grapplers that way; you have to actually be a functional grappler in those situations. These guys all looked equally pathetic on the ground against Khabib, I'm just saying that wasn't because Khabib was so invincible.

I know Sherdoggers love Gathje and Poirier, but they really don't have well rounded games. Amateur hour is over; time to get Khabib, Islam, and Charles into a fight off to see who is best!

I bet if Charles tools Islam, Khabib comes back.

With wrestlers, submission artists and strikers, stylistically, it's always been a bit like rock, paper, scissors, I feel.
Khabib was a stone beating a lot of scissors.
I miss him facing some solid paper.

No reason to shit on Khabib. But, his legacy will not stand the test of time. Even his protege is expected to do better according to that fanbase. Within a decade, Khabib will be seen as the second best LW ever. And his name won’t even be whispered in the true GOAT discussion. His resume is simply too light, and that’s never going to change.

I like this post. Who would the paper be?

This why the UFC actively avoids signing dominant but boring grapplers.

Colby was going to get cut by the UFC after amassing an 8-1 (7-1?) record in the UFC because he was a dominant but boring wrestler before he turned heel and dissed Brazil like he did.

Things like that is why the UFC will always be more entertainment rather than competitive sports league.

Well Islam made Diego Ramoz look like an amateur om the ground!!
Mcgregor fangirls stop the hypothetical match ups and wait for the matchup vs Islam!

I was far from shitting on him- I said him, Islam, and Charles were the best. I was merely pointing out that his resume lacks diversely skilled guys that can challenge him stylistically; those guys were helpless on the ground against Khabib, but helpless is a good description of Poirier in the grappling last night also.

Obviously it didn’t matter in the end but after seeing how things went down last night….. is anyone else impressed with how Chandler did in the grappling exchanges with with Charles?

unlike Dustin, Chandler was not afraid to mix it up with Charles.

Right, because the UFC is not under a union contract, and doesn't have a "fair" playoff system where everyone has an equal chance at a title in a given time period.

What does Charles' elite BJJ skills have anything to do with Khabib?

The fact of the matter is, both Khabib and Oliveira have proven themselves as two of the best grapplers in the history of MMA. Dustin has very good BJJ skills as well- He just simply isn't on the level of either Khabib or Charles when it comes to grappling. You're making it sound like any old decent grappler could come along and beat Dustin, which just isn't the case. Khabib and Charles are both the very elite of the elite cream of the crop when it comes to grappling skills in MMA.

Khabib retired as an undefeated champion and maybe lost a round or 2 during his entire MMA career. His legacy will endure the test of time.
His legacy in a sense will endure given his performances, but quitting so soon will make those GOAT/invincibility claims more doubtful when guys like Charles are accomplishing similar and eventually better things.

Many were saying no one could do what Khabib did- I'm saying this looks like someone else already can.

Dustin won a round off Charles, knocked him down twice, and had him doing the chicken dance several times. Khabib humiliated Dustin much more thoroughly. Just because they both submitted him in the 3rd round does not mean they were equal performances. Charles is very good but in both title fights now he’s lost rounds and been knocked down. He’s not dominant, people already forgetting how Khabib just walked through his opponents.

Actually, the words I used regarding the grapplers was dominant and elite, not "any old decent."

But only 3 title defenses. The 1 thing missing from the resume was a long title run. And the record while unbeaten is rather padded.. Especially early on..

That's why on my GOAT list he is behind

GSP
Jones
Anderson

They were all time long reigning champs..

Right, the takedown favored Khabib over Charles stylistically, so that changed Dustin's ability to throw down with the punches, where Charles' strength is the submissions; that enabled better damage by Dustin. However....

Thing is, in both cases:
1) the result was the same, a dominant looking finish, and (2) Dustin looked helpless during the grappling in both cases. I get that he was trying to be careful, but that's my whole point- that's because the skill gap is big in the grapplling in both cases.

that s because Chalie got the balls to mix it up while Dustin wasn t gassed
