Arguably the divisions hardest puncher.

UFC Philadelphia: Michael Johnson confused why Josh Emmett thinks he's a knockout artist

WILMINGTON, Del. March 27, 2019 – Michael Johnson is not overlooking Josh Emmett ahead of UFC on ESPN 2, but when it comes to their striking ability, he doesn’t see as big a knockout threat from his opponent. "Yeah, he’s got power, but I’m just so confused about why he’s got this cloud over his head that he’s being a knockout artist or a guy with a bunch of power,” Johnson told MMA Junkie. “He’s knocked out one guy in the UFC if I’m not mistaken. He definitely has power, but not crazy knockout power."

Short and not a lot of kicking offense, but a ball of muscle that hits lank a truck and is tough to grapple/clinch with. Basically he's built to eat other wrestlers or smaller pressure fighters alive.

He's tough as nails and hits like a beast but he's kind of reliant on guys standing in front of him or trading in the pocket, which is probably why he looked so amazing against Burgos, a guy that loves to fight with his hands down and throw hands in close.

Less than 3 years ago semi-washed Michael Johnson was easily out-pointing him for 2.5 rounds then got lazy, stood in front of him at close range and got murdered for it. That's not an ideal look, despite the amazing knockout - I'll always remember it, not for the KO (though it is pretty dope), but for how he used his time on the Mic to call out the UFC for not giving him a bonus yet and how they couldn't not give him one now.

Yep, they still didn't give him a bonus - asking for it on broadcast post-fight is the touch of death, the UFC hates it when it looks like you are begging for money, since it makes them look cheap, which they are.

This is FW and there aren't a lot of wrestlers at the top of the food chain - I looked at the rankings and the best wrestler in the division is Movslar Evloev. Bryce Mitchell is a great grappler but probably not an elite wrestler, just decent there. Neither of those guys are in the top 10, so they aren't even near being contenders yet - this division seems built to be dominated by tall/lanky strikers (and we don't even have Zabit any more!).

He's still so tough and powerful that he'd be a handful for anyone and always dangerous, but tough to imagine him dealing with tall guys like Yair's movement/kicks, Max's non-stop volume, and even Kattar & Zombie's boxing (though if they choose to stand and bang like they've been known to do it certainly becomes a coin-flip type of fight really quick).

I see him doing well against Ortega (still don't trust his defense and no idea how he'll come back after all that damage again) and maybe Kattar if he fights stupid, but that's it for the top 5. Outside of that he matches up well with Ige, Mitchell, and possibly even Evloev (very hittable and not that much taller).

Lets see how he does against Ige. I think that's a pretty evenly matched fight.

MJ is a fucking moron. He was 45 seconds away from winning a clear 30-27 decision but had to keep hotdogging and got himself dummied instead.

He also eats his shit whole.

Good summary. Ortega would really be a good matchup for him, but won't happen.
Kattar should outbox him.
Emmet gets old nowadays, 36 at FW is out of prime for like 2 years. Reactions and speed will go down quickly now.
He can win against a top 15 guy, maybe some top10, if the style is right, but will lose as many.

Yeah I didn’t even mention the facial/orbital damage against Stephens or the most recent knee destruction against Burgos:

36, almost two-year layoff after getting your knee completely ripped to shreds, in a lower weight class where speed is king… yeah I don’t know if he’ll even be anything close to the guy we saw against Burgos next time he fights.

That might’ve been his peak sad to say.

Too inconsistent to be a top contender
Top 15 but doesn't legit crack the top 5 or stay in the upper top 10 long either

He's too old unfortunately. Name the list of successful FW's who fight age 36 and above....

I'll watch his fights because they'll be exciting but he'll be a step behind guys and get used as a stepping stone. I hope he cashes in and gets some bonus checks though

When I think of Emmet, the only thing that comes to mind is his crazy gyno

Jeremy Stephens almost killed him and Michael Johnson was beating him pretty easily before getting ktfo. i think any of the elites would beat him easy. of course he has 1 punch KO power so it's not out of the question he KO's anyone in the world, but from what i've seen he doesn't have the skills to land it on the top guys.
