Does Charlie Ontiveros have the worst wrestling in the UFC?

The crazy thing is Ontiveros's last fight against Kevin Holland was at MW (I'm guessing short-notice?). Ontiveros is a career WW. He was fighting an opponent in Steve Garcia who has fought at BW multiple times.

That said, Ontiveros didn't really seem to have a size advantage fighting Garcia at LW. Garcia had nothing for Ontiveros on the feet, but fortunately for him, Ontiveros couldn't defend takedowns, couldn't scramble or sweep or threaten subs, and got bludgeoned with elbows.

In his last fight Ontiveros turned Kevin Holland of all people into a panic wrestler. Then he got that fluky neck injury off a slam, which may be why the UFC gave him another chance.

So, with John Phillips gone, does Ontiveros have the UFC's worst wrestling? And would he be better served going into kickboxing or Muay Thai?

I'd say so, he looked pretty useless off his back vs Garcia

A subtle distinction that makes a pretty big difference in terms of grappling ability

A shame Ontiveros is a can, if he could grapple we could've built up to a Charles Oliveira vs Charlie Ontiveros superfight.

probably Rozenstruik, every time he has been taken down he doesn't have a clue what to do, he is like a beached whale, he just holds them as tight as he can and waits for end of the round, or a ref is bored standup.

He is lucky that there is not many wrestlers in UFC HW and much more strikers, because the fights he has been taken down he is comically bad

So anyone who exploits a massive grappling advantage is now a "panic wrestler"?

Anyway, I'd say Till deserves a mention in this thread. Ontiveros has no business in the UFC; he belongs fighting on the local circuit. But Till is a legit UFC fighter who's actually fought for a title. The fact that he's still so lost on the ground doesn't speak well for his work ethic and/or coaches.

He's a local fighter I think he only got the shot because he took Holland short notice? Better than a lot of bottom-level strikers no wrestling meh it's the bottom of the division probably won't be around that long.

He has no business in the UFC, he's part of the Covid Crew - all those forgettable, poor regional circuit guys who were turning up and accepting fights during lockdown just to get a foot in the door. The majority of them went 0-2, 1-3 or similar and got cut, Ontiveros is joining them after this second loss. His axe-kicks are cool as fuck though.

I will agree Rozenstruick is not good off his back, but iirc the only UFC guys who have taken him down are JDS and Blaydes. Before the Blaydes fight his UFC TDD% was 80%, and while he got taken down multiple times by Blaydes (the all-time leader in career takedowns among UFC heavyweights), he was able to avoid getting subbed or TKO'd and to work back to his feet.

Ontiveros got taken down by Holland, who is known for being a poor wrestler.

Don't forget he spent damn near 5 rounds on his back vs Reem. I think diaper boy took him down too

Ferguson is just as bad
Tony Ferguson?
He's a former college wrestler (granted he doesn't use offensive wrestling as a weapon much in MMA) and a black belt in 10th Planet jiujitsu.

He's been controlled and almost submitted on the ground by Oliveira and Dariush, but they are both very very high-level black belts. Ferguson is very dangerous off his back and knows how to create scrambles. Ontiveros and Ferguson aren't even in the same universe grappling-wise.

I think Reem is actually who I was thinking of, not JDS but I can't remember for sure.

Rozenstruick falls into the category of "sometimes gets taken down, presents no submission threat on the ground but does just enough to survive and is sometimes able to get back to his feet"

I think there are actually a fair number UFC fighters who fall into that category. Just looking at HW, Greg Hardy and Walt Harris are both probably worse on the ground than Rozenstruick

you say wrestling but sounds like you are talking about grappling
