I’ve been wondering lately, what sports are enjoyed by what specific demographics in America? One of the main tells that has caused me to think MMA doesn’t get the respect it deserves is a public speech by an elite member of American society.
Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes speech (timestamped):
“So Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners, and if we kick them all out you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.”
Meryl was definitely talking from the position of the elite of American society, and responding to the then recent ushering in of president Donald Trump who was elected by the middle and working class of America.
The lower classes seem to enjoy heavier contact sports such as MMA and American football, meanwhile the upper classes seem to enjoy the more fluid sports of basketball, tennis, and all the country club sports. It is kind of a trope that the old school and Pride era MMA fans generally dislike where the sport is heading, so maybe this is an indication demographics are widening in who follows MMA.
Does MMA and the UFC not get the respect of other sports because it is seen as brute and something enjoyed by the lower classes?
