This award “Submission of the year” has a great importance for me and my legacy, years will pass but history will remain. There are many significant moments in my career, that will be remembered in years to come.

Is that what it was for?

I immediately thought of the RNCs then gaychee passing out, but...pretty standard stuff.

There were no better subs in 2020? Someone buttering Khabib up, hoping he will stick around.

It depends on how you rate subs - I use combination difficulty/uniqueness of technique and application, level of opposition, and stakes of competition.

There were some more "cool" subs like kneebars and flying triangles but they were hit against low-level opposition on prelim fight night cards.

Subbing a never-been-subbed before championship level fighter in a career-defining title fight by putting him unconscious is pretty damn impressive, if not for the triangle finish itself then the transition to get there (takedown to back take to mount to faked arm-triangle to s-mount....all in 15 seconds!).

Solid submission. Maybe not the most impressive or unique, but when combined with the moment and who it was against I've got no problem with it.

My thoughts exactly. The sub itself is like a 6-7 (though maybe the transition that preceded it was like a 9-10), but the level of competition and stakes were certainly a 10.

Not sure but I have a hard time believing there weren't better subs than a triangle choke against Justin Gaethje...

Even more confusing is how the fuck does Khabib win submission of the year when the sub is listed at #4 on the UFC website? lol

Did you even read the start of the article you linked? The very first line:

"The highly unofficial UFC.com best-of season continues..."

Khabib won the actual contest, which is voted on by fans and not decided by the UFC.

arine had better submission.you dont see that many of those everyday

She hit a kneebar counter on a girl that didn't even realize she had her in a calf-slicer; it was an absolutely savage leg-attack but the level of competition and stakes were very low. Deserving of being mentioned but certainly not winning - we actually saw two kneebars in WMMA this year (both Ariane and Dern), both were against super low-level competition with suspect grappling and were able to easily get them in the first round without much issue.

Maybe the most prolific but far from the most impressive.

I like Ariana Lipski’s :p
most major outlets gave it to AJ McKee

No, I didn't read it. I saw Khabib holding a UFC trophy so by nature, would assume it came from the UFC.

This is all sorts of fucking strange... lol not the best sub, regardless.
