Best Championship performance in the history of the sport. Made my jaw drop.
Perhaps the 2nd most impressive performance of all time behind Silva vs Griffin
Alvarez really shit the bed in that one.
Which begs the question, why didn't he try to wrestle?Alvarez was simply never good enough to beat McGregor in a striking battle, just like Poirier isn't.

Alvarez was already badly hurt before he tried to wrestle. He was overconfident and wanted to outbox McGregor, and he paid the price. He did, Conor had takedown defense. Eddie Alvarez isn't some high level wrestler either, he is a guy who is just good enough at everything.
When he fought Conor he just happened to run into a striking specialist who was able to force him to stand up.
^^^^^^^ Conor McGregor is a master of annoying the shit out of people. This was a classic case of a fighter having lost before he got in the cage. Said himself he did everything he trained not to. Pressure of the occasion and Conor making him fight emotionally.

You can look at that multiple ways. Conor might have had a full training camp but in both cases he accepted short notice replacements and the opponents weren't even remotely similar to the original matchups. This was very impressive, but not surprising. We saw in the Diaz fights that Conor is a excellent striker as he outstruck Diaz, both of whom are superior strikers to brawler Eddie. Eddie also doesnt have the chin of Diaz.
idk what Eddie's gameplan was, but he should be embarrassed with himself for such a pathetic performance. Short notice Mendes and Short notice Diaz did way better than the LW champ.
