if there's a close fight

do the judges always give the decision to the more popular/marketable fighter?

it's absolutely true for me, the most popular fighters ever lose decisions

GSP
Jones
Conor

etc...

Cruz Vs Tj was pretty funny because the fight was incredibly close yet no one argue about in the internet and when the decision was announced everyone cheered for Cruz

100%

Doesn't even have to be a close fight. The judges, the refs, the commission will be on the popular fighters side. Allowing free fouls to be committed. Stopping fights early if the popular fighter gets the upper hand for one second. Standing up fights too soon after a TD.

Kimbo Is the ultimate example. Damn near impossible to beat. Look at how they robbed the Colossus vs Kimbo.

I've noticed the fighter with the lower win bonus gets the nod more often than not when the fight is very close.

Also the fighter with the flat rate pay gets the nod over the fighter with the show/win contracts.

I think it goes both ways. If it’s the more popular fighter, we raise an eyebrow. If it’s the less popular, their win bonus is probably less and we will raise an eyebrow as well.

There’s just not really a way to avoid pissing people off in close fights.

Very interesting. I'm not familiar with fighter's contracts but someone should look into this and get the actual stats. See how strong the correlation is.

Judges always favor the champs in close fights that’s for sure.

Definitely not always the case. Cruz Vs Dillashaw, Edgar Vs Penn I, Forrest Vs Rampage, Lawler Vs Hendricks II, Henderson Vs Edgar I, Cejudo Vs Mighty Mouse were all close fights where the challenger got the nod.

I thought TJ won the fight but it was very close.

I am sure there are tons of exceptions. The one that pops into my mind is when Dalby fought Elizau Dos Santos and a clear majority of the media gave Dos Santos the nod in a close fight. Seemingly everybody in the forums agreed that Dos Santos edged it. The Dane that fought a Brazilian in Brazil still got the decision.

Remember Diego getting an absolute robbery over Gomi in Japan?
