I'm thinking specifically of Ben Askren. With his hip injury and now replacement, he can't fight in the UFC. It would be dangerous. But the UFC still owns his contract.

Or imagine a guy like Rampage retires at 35. Then decides he wants to come back at 40+. A 5 year lay off and being 40+ means it would be dangerous for him to fight UFC competition. But he's still a big name, and can safely earn money in places like Bellator..

Askren can still safely fight lower level competition though. Jake Paul would be a good way for him to safely earn a living. Fighting in lower level promotions might be a way for him to safely earn a living.

Does this mean that the UFC owns him for life? Can prevent him from making a living, for life? At some point, or in some circumstances, the exclusive contracts have to expire right?

The ufc has no room for non profitable old and injured fighters. They don't even want legit mid and upper tier fighters anymore.

Bellator will be gaining a lot of ground due to these poor decisions imo.

I'm assuming that if Askren pushed for a fight, and the UFC refused to give him one that would make the contract void. Leaving Askren to pursue other opportunities...

I think in theory, the UFC holds the exclusive rights. But when they aren't interested, they will release him. If they don't, they are obligated to give him a UFC fight, so they will be fine to release guys like Askren.

They either offer him fights or they release him. They can’t just keep him on the sidelines.

They could just give them an opponent outside of top 15? UFC is full of bums, they have like 30 bums per division

I never went to small shows and I used to want to beat royce's bitch face off. the shows and guys I fought were tougher than any one had in the UFC beside frank, which is a friend.

Askren didn't have a hip replacement.

Askren didn't have a hip replacement.
Yeah he did

How A Hip Replacement Surgery Helped Ben Askren Cure His Back Issues
.....
He would go ahead and get a hip replacement, which would force him to take up retirement. However, it was all for the best, as Askren commented on how hip replacement helped him with back pain.
“It’s called the Birmingham hip. What they do is they get it all cleaned up. They cap the top right off and the bone goes into the socket, so they cap the top of it and they clean up the inside and put some on the inside. I am pain free.

A Birmingham hip is not a replacement. They clean it up, cap the top right off and clean it up. It's different than a hip replacement.
