Stipe had a good, very good cardio, especially for HW !

His cardio was "bad" at the begining ( fight against Beltran and Struve was his problem ) ! He improved a first time against Roy Nelson, and a second time against Mark Hunt ( he break record of Strike in a fight for HW ) !

His durability and endurance improved a lot against DC 2 ( he took 181 significatif strike and 162 sign strike in the head... record for HW, and won the fight by TKO.... genius )

In the first fight against JDS, his cardio was good, but we can see in the 3rd round he gassed and his cardio was off ! I think he word hard and improved his cardio ( a little bit ) after this fight

Stipe hasn’t finished anyone but an exhausted fifty year DC once since 2016 summer. Maybe we should make a thread about his power and finish abilities leaving him?

He finished JDS in 2017 and has only had three other fights including the Cormier KO. So he still has a 50% finish rate in his wins during that time, only facing top tier dudes.

The only takeaway from this statement is the fact that the man that some around here call the greatest heavyweight in mma history has only fought 5 times since 2016, with three of those fights coming against the same old ass LHW.

the fifty years DC was the only double champ ( LHW-HW champ ) in history and was in his prime, and one of the greatest of all time !
This version of DC could beat everyone ! He landed 181 sign strikes on Stipe and 162 sign strike on his head ! I think nobody on the earth could destroyed Stipe like this ( even if he loses at the end )

People disrespecting Cormier like crazy. Even at 40 years old, guy would toy with most heavyweights ever. His skill-set was just too good. Even with all that he accomplished, I would say he fell short in what he was capable to be and that is a greatest LWH/HW ever. Stipe and DC fights were just a showing of how good were both guys.

To answer main thread question - Yes, I think Stipe all around improved in later stages of his career, cardio included. He became this dude who does nothing bad or even average, which is nightmare for many people.

this guy barely fights 1x per year...he's ruining the heavyweight division...he really needs to retire.

HW is, and always been, a shallow division. Stipe's inactivity is frustrating, and the trilogy with DC derailed what little continuity was left in the title picture. Hopefully he picks up his activity, loses and gets out of the way, or just straight up retires.

This. Stipe is great and all, but his inactivity and pickiness when it comes to his fights makes it hard for me to call him the heavyweight GOAT. Say what you will about Fedor, but the whole time he was in Pride, he fought at least twice and sometimes as many as five times in a single calendar year.

The first JDS fight is obviously the most intense cardio test he's had still though Jnr rocking him badly is also a significant factor.

JDS invested in body work in that fight and Stipe was constantly working for TDs and pursuing the clinch. It was also his 1st 5 rounder.

It’s not surprising he gassed.
