Would it change things for the public eye, or maybe for fans? I am not sure if it's me, but since covid I see lots of very bad match ups. Bad as in, fights with a huge skill gap. Imo this increases chances of a lethal injury. How do you all see this? Is it a matter of time before someone dies in the Octagon, and what effects will it potentially have?

Brendan Schaub already did. What we see now doing standup is an empty vessel.

I doubt it will happen live in the octagon, so the backlash would be similar to boxing, which on average has several fighters die from injuries a year. UFC is already pretty mainstream so this won't kill the sport, but it'll put a black mark on the sport so it'll never be bigger than soccer

It has happened in smaller promotions, it's a contact sport and it can happen. Nothing would change though

No weve already overcome the major obstacle of getting fighting accepted in public. I think people know accidents happen

It'll make fuck all waves in the mainstream/general public awareness.

What they do know of it, it probably won't change their pre existing view of it, anyway.

people have died in boxing, boxing survived.

Lol @ Schaub, love that gif. Im not very into boxing myself, but it's probably comparable. Imo mma is more graphic, more explicit maybe. A slam like Leavitt could kill a man. Also, some flying knees or G&P isvso freakin hard

I think we'll probably see a death from a weight cut before we see a death in the Octagon. Weight cutting just gets more and more extreme. There's already been several fighters hospitalized with serious conditions brought on by weight cuts, I think it's inevitable that there will eventually be a death which is horrible to think about. I'm sure that will lead to some changes (whether it's more weight classes or hydration testing or something).

I don't think it would get banned. If anything there's never been a death in a major promotion thus far so it shows that it's not the savage bloodsport detractors would maybe believe. Has boxing taking huge hits from the deaths they've had?

This is why we have PED testing and no foot stomps or soccer kicks.

I remember the dark days of John McCain getting the sport banned from PPV and don't want to go back.

Boxers die from fight related injuries all the time, it has not really affected them, same for MMA, not on the biggest org (yet).

It for sure will make waves and will be a story that never really disappears. Change depends on what exactly it was that killed the person. If its something that can be debated I could see the UFC/comission being forced to change things. Take for example effects of weightcutting that could've contributed to the death somehow.

A guy died cutting weight, I believe with ONE. Yet many of the folks aren’t even aware of that.

They would just have to bring back Goldberg to say "yes my son... it is all over."

When it happens I'll be joining Meryl Streep in her anti mma campaign.
Until then <{JustBleed}>
