UFC is heading in a troubling direction. (the cuts)

Turning Mas, a perpetual halfway goer with 27 decisions, into some kind of legendary finisher killer legend proved to me UFC can make something out of anyone. Also, UFC is like CocaCola - unless you're Conor or Nate - normies tune in for the brand, not so much for the names.

Add to it, whatever new crop they're bringing in will be more in tune with all this social media promoting. Someone like PMP is of more use than Jacare who probably doesn't even know how to recharge a flip phone. I'm sorry, but this is the reality of how UFC view this shit. And what the world seem to want.

Mas is a pretty unique circumstance. I think they can make a star, for sure, but they need some stuff to play out for them to do so. How many guys have his backstory? How many end up racking up the fastest KO after a ton of shit talk?

Do agree on the rest about the cuts tho

It's true that you gotta offer something. UFC can't build you just by themselves. Mas wrecked Ben and Till. Which was respectable. But you saw earlier this year with Burns, then with Zat and now Holland how quickly you can generate forward momentum with just a few wins.

And a lot of guys have good stories once you give them the opportunity to express themselves. I even started to like Dan Hooker as a person after listening to his podcast and hearing him talk about his life. Charles Oliveira is also slowly beginning to creep into peoples' minds, how he used to sell cheese salad for a living, got his name from everybody calling him "kid from the Bronx", most submission wins in UFC.

Everyone comes from somewhere and, by all accounts, grinding in this sport is just universally miserable.

I don't see any point in holding on to guys with zero future. Granted, I wish there was a way for older guys to go out and have a career, it just doesn't work that way in combat sports.

Do you really need to see JDS fight young guys, turtle up and get KO'ed every fight? A guy that was a monster and former champion just ruining his legacy for the up and comers? There comes a point where you have to let them go.

I've never liked fights for the sake of fighting and I have no idea who a lot of these new guys are. That said, it's a rebuilding period and we'll get some contenders out of it eventually. I have zero desire seeing a guy that is 12-6 fight another guy that is 13-8. These guys will never be champion or contenders so why should I care about watching them fight? Clear the roster and focus on people that have potential.

they control the matchmaking, they can stack the deck for guys. they did it for Mas and Conor. of course they still needed to win but Mas got served up a BMF title vs jouryneyman Nate Diaz and Conor got his title shot off of beating Denis Siver and avoided all of the wrestlers on his way to the title.

The quality of fighters have definitely gone down in the last few years.
It used to feel like the UFC was in the business of scouting and acquiring legitimate from other combat sports talent instead of manufactured reality tv stories or hyped up social media stars.
At the end of the day the UFC/WME/Dana write the script.

Sounds like the tears that were flowing when the UFC bought out pride and dissolved it. Wasnt that the end of times for the UFC? Or was it the TUF era or maybe WMMA. Dam, Im surprised they are even around now days. And also the biggest most successful MMA org.

It's not about the UFC. It's about WME. The UFC will structure itself in WME's interest, not the UFC's interest, and the UFC's longterm or even short term viability isn't in the WME's best interest in every scenario. That's just my opinion.
